SPEAKER CONNECTIONS 9Speaker-Level Connection GuideIMPORTANT NOTE: Before making speakerconnections, be certain that your receiver oraudio power amplifier is turned off andpreferably unplugged from its AC powersource. The SUB-TS7 subwoofer shouldnot be connected to an AC power sourceuntil all speaker wire connections havebeen made.Speakers and electronics terminals havecorresponding (+) and (–) terminals. Mostmanufacturers of speakers and electronics, including Harman Kardon, use red to denotethe (+) terminal and black for the (–)terminal.Newer Harman Kardon receivers conform tothe CEA standard and therefore use a colorother than red or black for the (+) terminalto indicate some speaker positions: e.g.,surround left. Although the HKTS 7 systemhas red and black collars on the individualspeaker terminals to denote the positive andnegative connections, your system includesa colored band on the positive lead at bothends of every speaker cable and a matchingcolored sticker for each of the four satellitespeakers, conforming to the key on page 7.The center speaker has a green (+) terminal, and the subwoofer has a purple SUB inputjack. This system is intended to help youensure that the speaker in each location isconnected to the correct terminals on yourreceiver or amplifier. The (+) lead of the speaker wire is indicatedwith a stripe and has the colored band cor-responding to the speaker’s position. It isimportant to connect all speakers identically:(+) on the speaker to (+) on the amplifierand (–) on the speaker to (–) on the ampli-fier. Wiring “out of phase” results in thinsound, weak bass and a poor stereo image. With the advent of multichannel surroundsound systems, connecting all of the speakersin your system with the correct polarityremains equally important in order to preservethe proper ambience and directionality of theprogram material. To connect the supplied speaker wires tothe satellite and center speaker terminalslocated on the bottom of each speaker, press the red or black tab, insert the bareend of the wire into the hole, and releasethe tab. Gently tug on the wire to make surethat it is fully inserted. For the best performance, Harman Kardonrecommends that the subwoofer beconnected using either the Line-LevelSubwoofer (SUB) Input ∞ or the Line-Level Full-Range Inputs §. However,if the application requires the use of thespeaker-level connections for the subwoofer, unscrew the binding-post collar until thepass-through hole in the center post is visi-ble under the collar. Insert the bare end ofthe wire through this hole; then screw thecollar down until the connection is tight. Thehole in the center of each collar is intendedfor use with banana-type connectors.SPEAKER CONNECTIONS
