Installing an adapterThe following notes describe the types of adapters that the server supports andother information that you must consider when installing an adapter:v Locate the documentation that comes with the adapter and follow thoseinstructions in addition to the instructions in this section.v There are two types of adapters that you can install, depending on which slotsare available. You can install the following types of adapters in PCI slots 1 and 2:– Only a PCI Express adapter into slot 1– Any PCI-X or PCI Express adapter into slot 2Each PCI slot requires a riser card assembly. The server comes with two PCIExpress riser card assemblies. If you plan to install a PCI-X adapter, you mustinstall the optional PCI-X riser card assembly.To install an adapter, complete the following steps:1. Read the safety information that begins on page v and the “Installationguidelines” on page 23.2. Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords andall external cables, if necessary; then, remove the server cover.Riser-cardassemblyAdaptersupportbracketExpansion slot 2Expansionslot coverRiser-cardconnectorPCI adapter3. Follow the cabling instructions, if any come with the adapter. Route the adaptercables before you install the adapter.4. Insert the adapter into the riser-card assembly, aligning the edge connector onthe adapter with the connector on the riser-card assembly. Press the edge ofthe connector firmly into the riser-card assembly. Make sure that the adaptersnaps into the riser-card assembly securely.Attention: When you install an adapter, make sure that the adapter iscorrectly seated in the riser-card assembly and that the riser-card assembly issecurely seated in the riser-card connector on the system board before you turnon the server. An incorrectly seated adapter might cause damage to the systemboard, the riser-card assembly, or the adapter.5. Install the riser-card assembly in the server.
