Microprocessor problemsv Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problemis solved.v See Chapter 3, “Parts listing, Type 8864,” on page 23 to determine which components are customerreplaceable units (CRU) and which components are field replaceable units (FRU).v If an action step is preceded by “(Trained service technician only)”, that step must be performed only by atrained service technician.Symptom ActionThe server emits a continuousbeep during POST, indicatingthat the startup (boot)microprocessor is not workingcorrectly.1. Correct any errors indicated by the light path (see “Light path diagnostics” onpage 101).2. Make sure that all microprocessors are supported on this server, and that theyall match in speed and cache size.3. (Trained service technician only) Make sure that the microprocessor 1 is seatedcorrectly.4. Make sure the following components are seated correctly:a. (Trained service technician only) Microprocessor 1b. Microprocessor VRM 3 or 4c. Microprocessor tray5. (Trained service technician only) Remove microprocessor 2 and restart theserver.v If no beep code occurs, microprocessor 2 might have failed; replace themicroprocessor.v If the beep code remains, remove microprocessor 1 and installmicroprocessor 2 in the connector for microprocessor 1; then, restart theserver. If no beep code occurs, microprocessor 1 might have failed; replacethe microprocessor.6. (Trained service technicians only) If there is no indication of whichmicroprocessor has failed, isolate the error by testing with one microprocessorat a time.7. Replace the following components one at a time, in the order shown, restartingthe server each time.a. (Trained service technician only) Microprocessor 1b. Microprocessor VRM 3 or 4c. (Trained service technician only) Microprocessor tray8. (Trained service technician only) If there are multiple microprocessor, light path,or error codes that indicate a damaged microprocessor, switch twomicroprocessors to see if the error moves with the microprocessor or if it stayswith the microprocessor socket.Note: For sockets 3 and 4, if the error stays with the socket, switch the VRM3and VRM4.v If the error moved with the microprocessor, replace the microprocessor.v If the error moved with the VRM, replace the VRM.v If the error stayed at the same socket, replace the microprocessor tray.Monitor problemsSome IBM monitors have their own self-tests. If you suspect a problem with yourmonitor, see the documentation that comes with the monitor for instructions fortesting and adjusting the monitor.
