Typical operating-system installationThe ServerGuide program can reduce the time it takes to install an operatingsystem. It provides the device drivers that are required for your hardware and forthe operating system that you are installing. This section describes a typicalServerGuide operating-system installation.Note: Features and functions can vary slightly with different versions of theServerGuide program.1. After you have completed the setup process, the operating-system installationprogram starts. (You will need your operating-system CD to complete theinstallation.)2. The ServerGuide program stores information about the server model, serviceprocessor, hard disk drive controllers, and network adapters. Then, theprogram checks the CD for newer device drivers. This information is storedand then passed to the operating-system installation program.3. The ServerGuide program presents operating-system partition options that arebased on your operating-system selection and the installed hard disk drives.4. The ServerGuide program prompts you to insert your operating-system CDand restart the server. At this point, the installation program for the operatingsystem takes control to complete the installation.Installing your operating system without using ServerGuideIf you have already configured the server hardware and you are not using theServerGuide program to install your operating system, you can downloadoperating-system installation instructions for the server from http://www.ibm.com/supportportal/.Using the integrated management moduleThe integrated management module (IMM) is a second generation of the functionsthat were formerly provided by the baseboard management controller hardware. Itcombines service processor functions, video controller, and remote presencefunction in a single chip. The IMM supports the following basic systems-management features:v Active Energy Manager.v Alerts (in-band and out-of-band alerting, PET traps - IPMI style, SNMP, e-mail).v Auto Boot Failure Recovery.v Automatic Server Restart (ASR) when POST is not complete or the operatingsystem hangs and the operating-system watchdog timer times out. The IMMmight be configured to watch for the operating-system watchdog timer andrestart the server after a timeout, if the ASR feature is enabled. Otherwise, theIMM allows the administrator to generate an NMI by pressing a nonmaskableinterrupt button on the information panel for an operating-system memorydump. ASR is supported by Intelligent Peripheral Management Interface (IPMI).v Boot sequence manipulation.v Command-line interface.v Configuration save and restore.104 IBM System x3850 X5 and x3950 X5 Types 7145, 7146, 7143, and 7191: Installation and User's Guide
