Note: To remove an internal removable flash memory drive, push down on thelocking collar to unlock the drive before you remove the drive.6. Reinstall the power supply (see Installing a hot-swap power supply) andreconnect the power cable.7. (IBM Business Partners only) Restart the server. Confirm that it starts correctlyand recognizes the newly installed devices, and make sure that no error LEDsare lit.8. (IBM Business Partners only) Complete the additional steps in “Instructions forIBM Business Partners” on page 29.Memory modulesThe following notes describe the types of dual inline memory modules (DIMMs)that the server supports and other information that you must consider when youinstall DIMMs:v To confirm that the server supports the memory modules that you are installing, see http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/.v All server model types support 1.5 V, and model types 7143 and 7191 alsosupport 1.35 V, 240-pin, 2 GB PC3-10600 or 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB PC3-8500double data-rate (DDR) III, registered synchronous dynamic random-accessmemory (SDRAM) with error correcting code (ECC) DIMMs. Model types 7145and 7146 also support 1 GB DIMMs. These DIMMs must be compatible with thelatest PC3-10600 or PC3-8500 SDRAM Registered DIMM specifications.v The server supports up to eight memory cards. Each memory card holds up toeight DIMMs.v At least one memory card with one pair of DIMMs must be installed for theserver to operate.v The Intel 7500 Scalable Memory Buffer and the Intel 7510 Scalable MemoryBuffer are not interchangeable and cannot be used in the same server. Check thelabel on the top of the memory card and then see http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/ to verify that the memorycard you are installing is supported in the server.v The server supports an additional 512 GB of memory when the 32-DIMMoptional IBM MAX5 for System x memory expansion module is attached to theserver. An additional 1 TB of memory is supported when 32 GB DIMMs areavailable.v When you install additional DIMMs on a memory card, be sure to install themin pairs. The DIMMs in each pair must match each other.v The server supports memory sparing. Memory sparing reserves memorycapacity for failover in the event of a DIMM failure, and the reserved capacity issubtracted from the total available memory. Memory sparing provides lessredundancy than memory mirroring does. If a predetermined threshold ofcorrectable errors is reached, the contents of the failing DIMM are copied to thespare memory, and the failing DIMM or rank is disabled. To enable memorysparing through the Setup utility, select System Settings > Memory. (Memorysparing and memory mirroring cannot be used at the same time.)v You do not have to save new configuration information to the IMM when youinstall or remove DIMMs. The only exception is if you replace a DIMM that wasdesignated as disabled in the Setup utility Memory Settings menu. In this case, you must re-enable the row in the Setup utility or reload the default memorysettings.64 IBM System x3850 X5 and x3950 X5 Types 7145, 7146, 7143, and 7191: Installation and User's Guide
