Chapter 5. Configuring your blade serverThis chapter contains instructions for establishing a Serial Over LAN (SOL)connection, enabling the SOL feature, and configuring the blade server so that youcan run SOL sessions and use the BladeCenter management-modulecommand-line interface. This chapter also explains how to update and configureBladeCenter components for SOL operation using the management-moduleWeb-based management and configuration program. The IBM EserverBladeCenter management-module command-line interface provides access to thetext-console command prompt on each blade server through an SOL connection, enabling the blade servers to be managed from a remote location. You also can perform many configuration procedures using themanagement-module command-line interface. See the IBM Eserver BladeCenterManagement Module Command-Line Interface Reference Guide on the IBMBladeCenter Documentation CD for information and instructions. In addition, youcan use the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to perform configurationprocedures. SNMP commands are described in the IBM Eserver BladeCenterManagement Module Command-Line Interface Reference Guide on the IBMBladeCenter Documentation CD. For additional information about SNMP, see alsothe IBM 4-Port Gb Ethernet Switch Module for BladeCenter Installation and User’sGuide or Nortel Networks Layer 2-7 GbE Switch Module for IBM BladeCenterInstallation Guide on the IBM BladeCenter Documentation CD.The firmware code in your blade server uses auto-configuration; therefore, additional blade-server configuration programs are not required for the blade server. However, if you have attached other devices to the blade server or the BladeCenterunit, you must configure those devices as described in the applicabledocumentation that comes with those devices or the BladeCenter unit. You do nothave to set any passwords to use the blade server. If you change the battery orreplace the system board, you must reset the date and time through your operatingsystem. For information about setting up your network configuration for remotemanagement, see the IBM Eserver BladeCenter Planning and Installation Guide. You can obtain the planning guide from the Web site athttp://www.ibm.com/pc/eserver/bladecenter.Note: Before you can run programs on the blade server, you must establish anSOL connection and install an operating system on the blade server. Forinformation about installing your operating system, see Chapter 7, “Installingthe operating system,” on page 61.Using the Serial Over LAN (SOL) feature on the blade serverBefore you can perform the following tasks, you must establish an SOL connectionand start an SOL session on the blade server:v Establishing a communications channel between the blade server and acompatible monitor (or video console), keyboard, and mouse.v Installing the operating system on the blade server.v Configuring the SOL feature.v Running diagnostics programs.v Having the blade server serviced.© Copyright IBM Corp. 2004 41
