5-Tone (PMR) Signalling32Why chose 5-Tone?•5-Tone is a non-proprietary signalling protocol thatallows the Icom radio to inter-operate with other brandsusing the 5-Tone signalling.•This protocol also allows a mixed fleet operation.•It is faster than 2-Tone by employing a quick databurst.•Customers are familiar with the protocol since it is anIndustry Standard in USA, Europe, and Asia.•Many manufacturers built dispatch consoles with thiscapability.•5-Tone offers flexible muting characteristics.5-Tone Features1.Selective Calling” – allows the dispatch console topage an individual unit.•“Group Calling” - allows the dispatch console to page agroup.•“Answer Back Call” – Also known as “Radio Check”allows the dispatch console to send a 5-Tone sequenceto a particular radio and when the target radio receivesthe tone it answers back with another tone. Thisfunction serves as a tool to verify if a unit is “ON” andwithin range.•“Auto Transmit” – Also known as “Radio Spy” allowsthe dispatcher to send a 5-Tone signal to the radiocausing it to open its transmitter microphone audio (HotMic) in order to listen to whatever is happening in theproximity of the radio. This is also very useful inemergency cases where the user may not be able totrigger the microphone.•“Stun/Kill – This function allows the dispatch consoleto disable temporarily or permanently a unit using the 5-Tone capabilities. When “Stun” is used, the unit mayregain its functionality by entering a password. When Killis used, the radio only regains functionality byreprogramming the unit using the cloning software.•“Scan Start/Cancel” – Using 5-Tone a dispatcher cansend a signal to a radio or a group to commence the“Scan” function of the radio. If used with a group ofusers, this feature allows the dispatcher to regroupeveryone in a different channel. This feature is alsoknown as “Radio Regroup”.1. 5-Tone allows the PTT ID functionality on the radio.2. As with 2-Tone, PMR also provides audible alerts, emergency signalling and Dispatch functionalitymaking it a workable upgrade to an existing fleet.***All these functions can be accomplished withindividual radios also.5-Tone Enhancements1. The PMR model and radio functionality provides theprogrammer with RX Text identifiers. When aparticular 5-Tone sequence is received, a radio withdisplay will show the alias attributed to that tonesequence.2. Where applicable, this radio also has flashingindicators, variable audible signals and beeps.3. When transmitting a 5-Tone sequence, the radio canselect from a programmed list with aliases in order toidentify the code desired for TX.4. PMR radios allow for TX code editing and the creationof a custom “User Code” that will allow theprogrammer to create a unique code for a customer.5. The system also allows for a user to select the TXcodes by assigning a button on the radio.
