SPEAKER PLACEMENT• As a general rule, bassresponse increases as a sub-woofer is placed closer to awall. Therefore, bass outputis maximized when the sub-woofer is placed in a corner.• It is also recommended thatthe subwoofer be positionedalong the same wall as thefront loudspeakers.Low-frequency sounds arenormally omnidirectional, meaning the listener can’t tellwhere they are generatedfrom. However, frequenciesbetween 75Hz and 150Hz canbe localized, especially athigher volume levels. Position-ing your subwoofer as recom-mended will provide the mostnatural soundstage andimaging from your loudspeakersystem.Remember that these are justguidelines. Since every listen-ing room is different, JBLstrongly recommends experi-menting with the positioning ofyour subwoofer to obtain themost pleasing results in yourroom. One technique that canhelp you find the ideal sub-woofer location is to temporar-ily place the subwoofer nearthe main listening location. Then move around the roomand determine where you hearthe most pleasing bass perfor-mance. This would then be theideal location for the sub-woofer.SPEAKER CONNECTIONWhen we designed the BalboaSub powered subwoofer, ourgoal was to offer the user thebest possible performancecombined with the most flexi-ble and complete installationoptions. Please look over thefollowing three examples todetermine which descriptionbest matches your system andfollow the correspondinghookup instructions. To use the binding-postspeaker terminals with barewire, unscrew the collar untilthe hole through the centerpost is visible under the collar.Insert the bare end of the wirethrough the hole in the post, then screw the collar backdown until the connection istight. The holes in the center ofthe collars are intended forbanana-type connectors. To comply with European CEcertification, these holes areblocked with plastic inserts atthe point of manufacture. Touse banana-type connectorsrequires the removal of theinserts. Do not remove theseinserts if you are using theproduct in an area covered bythe European CE certification.Speakers and electronics ter-minals have correspondingpositive (+) and negative (–)terminals. It is important toconnect both speakers identi-cally: positive (+) on thespeaker to positive (+) on theamplifier and negative (–) onthe speaker to negative (–) onthe amplifier. Wiring “out ofphase” results in thin sound, weak bass and a poor stereoimage. With the advent of multichan-nel surround sound systems, connecting all of the speakersin your system with the correctpolarity remains equally impor-tant in order to preserve theproper ambience and direc-tionality of the programmaterial.3EnglishTHANK YOU FOR CHOOSING JBLFor more than 50 years, JBLhas been involved in everyaspect of music and filmrecording and reproduction, from live performances to therecordings you play in yourhome, car or office. We’re confident that the JBLsystem you have chosen willprovide every note of enjoy-ment that you expected – andthat when you think about pur-chasing additional audioequipment for your home, caror office, you will once againchoose JBL.Please take a moment to regis-ter your product on our Website at www.jbl.com.This enables us to keep youposted on our latest advance-ments, and helps us to betterunderstand our customers andbuild products that meet theirneeds and expectations.JBL Consumer Products
