The P81 and P941 feature gold-platedbinding posts that allow for two meth-ods of connecting the speaker wires.CAUTION: Never make or break con-nections unless all system componentsare powered off. Before making connections, note thefollowing:• Make all connections observing theproper polarity, positive-to-positive (+)and negative-to-negative (–). Connec-tions that do not observe the properpolarity will cause poor stereo imag-ing and diminished bass response. With the advent of multichannel sur-round systems, maintaining properpolarity remains equally important topreserve the correct ambience anddirectionality of the program material.• Use high-quality loudspeaker cablewith a maximum total loop resistanceof 0.07 ohms or less (for each wirerun). Refer to the table below todetermine the appropriate maximumwire gauge.• All in-wall speaker wires must be ULlisted for use in in-wall applications.CAUTION: Be sure to comply with localwiring codes. JBL is not responsible forany damage or injuries that may resultfrom faulty wiring.Maximum Wire GaugeGauge Length Length(AWG) (Feet) (Meters)6 87 277 69 218 58 189 43 1310 34 1011 27 812 22 713 17 514 14 415 11 316 9 317 7 218 5 2NOTE: High loop resistances thatexceed 0.07 ohms (for each wire run)will cause the filter network to mis-terminate, resulting in considerabledegradation of sound quality.Figure 18: Making Connections• Contact an authorized JBL dealer forinformation about the suitability ofpower amplifier/receiver componentsbefore connecting the P81 or P941to the associated power amplifier/receiver.• Review the owner’s manuals for asso-ciated audio components to deter-mine their connection procedures.Connections are made between onepair of P81 or P941 input connectorsand one amplifier/receiver outputchannel, as described below. To Make Connections:1. Loosen the terminal connectors byhand (counterclockwise) on thespeakers’ positive (+) and negative(–) binding posts until the holes intheir threaded posts are visible.2. Insert the stripped ends of thewires through the holes, as shownin Figure 18.3. Retighten the connectors by hand(clockwise) to secure the wire. Besure no stray strands of wire fromone binding post touch the otherbinding post, as this will short-out thesignal and may damage the amplifier.4. In the manner described above, con-nect one pair of loudspeaker wiresto the P81 or P941 input connectors. Then connect the same pair of loud-speaker wires to the desired amplifier/receiver output channel.5. Repeat Steps 1 to 4 to connect thesecond P81 or P941 to a separateamplifier/receiver output channel. An alternative connection method, instead of those described in Steps 1 to3, is to attach standard banana plugs tothe speaker wires and plug them intothe ends of the speaker connectors. The hole in the center of each collar isintended for use with banana-type con-nectors. To comply with European CEcertification, these holes are blockedwith plastic inserts at the point ofmanufacture. The use of banana-typeconnectors requires the removal ofthe inserts. Do not remove theseinserts if you are using the productin an area covered by the EuropeanCE certification. If using a back box or if limited byinstallation depth, the banana plugscan also be inserted through the sidesof the binding posts.
