Painting the GrilleFor best results, it is recommendedthat the grille be painted with a sprayapplicator to enable the paint to beevenly applied to the inside edges ofthe grille’s perforations. The following items are required topaint the grille:• the grille (included)• replacement scrim cloth (included)• spray paint• paint thinner (and cloth)• rubbing alcohol (and cloth)• white or neutral color water-basedprimer• masking tape• spray adhesiveCAUTION: The grille must be paintedbefore it is attached to the frame. To Paint the Grille:1. Remove the grille from the grille filler.2. Remove the scrim cloth on the insidesurface of the grille. If necesssary, slightly peel up the lower insideedges of the black felt strips toremove the scrim.3. Inspect the inside surface of thegrille to ensure that there are noremnants of the scrim cloth. If neces-sary, remove any remnants by rub-bing with a cloth dampened withpaint thinner.4. Clean the front grille surface with acloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.5. Apply masking tape over the blackfelt strips around the grille perimeterto shield them from paint. Be sure tomask only the felt and not the outermetal edges of the grille, so that theywill be painted.6. Apply one coat of the primer and letit dry.7. Thin the paint before application.8. Apply one to two coats of spraypaint. Use a varied spraying anglewhen spraying, to ensure paint isapplied to the inside edges of thegrille perforations. After the paint is dried, install thereplacement scrim cloth, if desired. To Attach the Replacement Scrim Cloth:1. Place the grille face down on a softsurface.2. If paint thinner was used to removescrim remnants, apply a light coatingof a spray adhesive to the insidegrille surface. Avoid spraying adhe-sive onto the felt strips. If too muchadhesive is used, it could wick intothe cloth and degrade the sound.3. Place the replacement scrim clothin the grille with the cardboard sidefacing upward (so that the cardboardis not visible through the front of thegrille).4. Tuck the outer edges of the scrimcloth cardboard frame under theblack felt strips and gently smooththe scrim cloth over the grille surfaceto remove any wrinkles.Attaching the Grille to theFrameTo Attach the Grille:1. Line the grille up to the frame andpress the grille in only partially atfirst.2. Push gently at multiple points aroundthe outer edges to slowly ease it intoposition.NOTE: Configure the four front-panelcontrols and experiment until optimalresults are achieved, before installingthe grille.Grille RemovalTo Remove the Grille:1. Insert the small end of the included1/16-inch Allen key into one of themetal mesh holes in the top cornerof the grille, as shown in Figure 20.2. With the end of the Allen key in thegrille hole approximately 1/8 inch, with thumb and forefinger close tothe grille, pull up on the Allen key towedge it into the grille hole.3. Gently pull the Allen key to partiallypop out the corner of the grille.4. Repeat Steps 1 to 3 for the other topcorner.5. Apply Steps 1 to 4 for the bottomcorners.6. When all corners are partiallypopped out, the grille can easilybe removed.Figure 20: Removing the GrilleCAUTION: Do not attempt to pry thegrille out using the Allen key (or anyother object) as a pry bar against theplastic frame. This will cause damageto the frame and mar the paint.Speaker Frame RemovalTo remove the speaker frame from wallopening:1. Fully unscrew all of the clampsaround the speaker housing. Theclamp screws have an acorn nutattached on their end to preventaccidental disassembly.2. Move the speaker housing awayfrom the wall enough to wedge yourhand behind and pinch a clamp shut.3. While the clamp is shut, work thespeaker housing forward enough tocatch the shut clamp in the wallopening.4. Work around the perimeter, carefullyclosing each clamp and then slowlypull the speaker housing from thewall.LOUDSPEAKER VOLUME LEVELSHigh-order filters include steep cut-offsto reduce potential damage from “out-of-band” frequencies. Combined withcarefully selected transducers and fil-ter network components, this approachhelps the P81/P941 to maintain its per-formance under extreme operatingconditions. However, all loudspeakers have limitswhen it comes to continuous playback. To extend these limits, avoid playbackat volume levels that distort or strainsound.Grille1/16-inch Allen keyFrameFigure 20: Removing the Grille13 |
