Page 93.1.3 Pipe SizingNOTE All HP ratings given in this section apply to Full-rated pumps. For help with max-rated pumps, contact Jandy Customer service.3.1.3.1 Suction PipeWhen the pump is located up to 50 feet from thepool, the recommended minimum pipe size for thesuction side of the pump is 2" for ¾ to 1½ HP*.For 2 HP* pumps recommended pipe size is 2½".For 3 HP* pumps, recommended pipe size is 3".* HP refers to full rated pumps3.1.3.2 Discharge PipeWhen the pump is located up to 50 feet from thepool, the recommended minimum pipe size for thedischarge side of the pump is 2" for ¾ to 1½ HP*.For 2 HP* pumps recommended pipe size is 2½".For 3 HP* pumps, recommended pipe size is 3".* HP refers to full rated pumpsNOTE All pipe sizes are able to withstand the pressuresthe pump will deliver, but not the flow. If the pipeis too small for the pump, or it is elevated abovewater, the maximum gallons per minute (GPM)may not be delivered and the pump will makenoise and shorten pump life. (cavitate)3.1.3.3 Installation Recommendations1. If the pump is located below water level, isolation valves must be installed on both sidesof the pump to prevent back flow of pool waterduring any routine or required servicing.2. To help prevent difficulty in priming, install thesuction pipe without high points (above inlet ofpump - inverted "U's" in plumbing), which cantrap air. For installations of equipment up to 100feet from the water, refer to the pipe sizing chart,Table 1. For installations of equipment more than100 feet from the water, the recommended pipemust be increased to the next size.Table 1. Stealth Pumps come equipped with unions onboth the suction and discharge ports. This featuresimplifies installation, service, and eliminatesthe possibility of leaks at threaded adapters.4. The Stealth Pump must be connected to at leasttwo (2) hydraulically balanced main drains foreach pool pump suction line. Each drain must beprovided with covers that are listed or certified toANSI/ASME A112.19.8. The suction fittings ofthe main drains must be at least three feet apartor at different planes. The suction fittings can bea drain and skimmer, two drains, two skimmers,or a skimmer with an equalizer line installed.Check the local codes for proper installation.NOTE To prevent entrapment, the system must be builtso that it cannot operate with the pump drawingwater from only one main drain. At least two maindrains must be connected to the pump when it isin operation. However, if two main drains run intoa single suction line, the single suction line maybe equipped with a valve which will shutoff bothmain drains from the pump.5. The piping must be well supported and notforced together where constant stress will beexperienced.6. Always use properly sized valves. Jandy ®Diverter Valves and Jandy® Ball Valves typicallyhave the best flow capabilities.7. Use the fewest fittings possible. Every fittingadded has the effect of moving the equipmentfarther away from the water.NOTE If more than ten (10) suction fittings are needed, the pipe size must be increased.8. Every new installation must be pressure testedaccording to local codes.WARNINGDo not pressure test above 35 PSI. Pressuretesting must be done by a trained pool professional.Circulation equipment that is not tested properlywill fail, which could result in severe injury orproperty damage.WARNINGTrapped air in system can cause pump lid to beblown off which can result in death, serious injury,or property damage. Be sure all air is properlyout of system before operating. DO NOT USECOMPRESSED AIR TO LEAK OR PRESSURETEST.
