6.2.3 Mechanical Seal ReplacementNOTE This is a two-part replacement process. Themechanical seal must be replaced as a set.NOTE Refer to Figure 17 for an illustration of thelocation of the mechanical seal and impeller.CAUTIONDo not damage the ceramic or carbon surfaces of theseals. If the surfaces are damaged, leaks will occur.1. To access the mechanical seal, follow Steps 1through 9 of Section 6.2.2, Impeller Removal andReplacement.2. Remove the carbon face seal half from the motorshaft (See Figure 15). This is a spring-loaded seal.Grasp the portion of the seal closest to the impellerbody and pull the seal off, using a twisting motion.3. Remove the motor from the backplate, followingthe steps in Section 6.2.5, Motor Replacement.4. Place the backplate o-ring side down and force theceramic seal out using a screwdriver or drift.5. Turn the backplate o-ring side up and insert thenew ceramic seal side into the backplate. Usegreat care to press the seal in squarely with yourfingers. The ceramic is easily damaged and mustbe pressed in using only your fingers or soft tools.Do not use any lubricant other than water or soapywater.6. Install the backplate by following the relevantsteps in Section 6.2.2.1, Impeller Reassembly.7. Install the motor by following the steps inSection 6.2.4, Motor Replacement.6.2.4 Motor ReplacementWARNINGTo ensure continued safety and reliable operation,Zodiac Pool Systems, Inc. requires that you replacethe motor with a motor that has the identical HPrating and service factor (Zodiac Pool Systems, Inc.approved unit only).1. Have a qualified service technician or electricianproperly disconnect the electrical wiring at thepump motor.Figure 18. Wait five (5) minutes after power isdisconnected before opening motor. On the JandyPro Series Motor Model Only, do not proceed untilthe LED on top of the Drive Electronics Unit iscompletely off. Failure to comply may cause a shockhazard, resulting in severe personal injury or death.NOTE Zodiac Pool Systems, Inc. recommends thatthe mechanical seals be replaced at the sametime the motor is replaced. See Section 6.2.3,Mechanical Seal Replacement, for details.2. To detach the pump housing from the motor,follow Steps 1 through 10 in Section 6.2.2,Impeller Removal and Replacement.3. Note the alignment of the backplate to the motor,as shown in Figure 18. Place the backplate motorassembly o-ring side down, unscrew the four 9/16"screws, and remove the motor.4. If installing a new motor, remove the protectiveplastic cap from the motor shaft. Place the motoron the backplate so that the opening in the motorfaces the bottom of the backplate. The electronicscontroller on the motor should be at the 12 o’clockposition.5. Replace the four (4) bolts and washers holding thebackplate to the motor.6.
