21Rotating and Replacing Knife Inserts(JJ-6HHDX)Knife inserts are dangerouslysharp. Use extreme caution when inspecting, removing, or replacing knife inserts. The knife inserts on the model JJ-6HHDX Jointerare four-sided. When dull, simply remove eachinsert, rotate it 90° for a fresh edge, and re-installit. No further adjustment is necessary.Use the two provided star point screwdrivers toremove the knife insert screw. Use one of thescrewdrivers to help hold the cutterhead inposition, and the other to remove the screw. SeeFigure 30a. It is advisable to rotate all inserts at thesame time to maintain consistent cutting. However,if one or more knife inserts develops a nick, rotateonly those inserts that are affected. Each knife insert has an etched reference mark soyou can keep track of the rotations.IMPORTANT: When removing or rotating inserts, clean saw dust from the screw, the insert, and thecutterhead platform. Dust accumulation betweenthese elements can prevent the insert from seatingproperly, and may affect the quality of the cut. Before installing each screw, lightly coat the screwthreads with machine oil and wipe off any excess.Securely tighten each screw which holds the knifeinserts before operating the planer!Make sure all knife insertscrews are tightened securely. Loose insertscan be propelled at high speed from a rotatingcutterhead, causing injury.Determining Correct Table HeightWhen you receive the jointer, the knives havebeen pre-set at the factory. However, the heightand parallelism of the knives with the outfeed tableshould be checked, and any needed adjustmentsmade, before putting the jointer into operation. The outfeed table and cutterhead knives arecorrectly adjusted when all three blades areparallel to the outfeed table and all three bladesare set at the same height in the cutterhead.Outfeed table too high – If the outfeed table is toohigh, a curved finished surface results (Figure 31).Outfeed table too low – If the outfeed table is toolow, the work will have a gouge, or snipe, at theend of the cut (Figure 32).Outfeed table at correct setting – Figure 33illustrates the correct setting of outfeed table levelwith the knives.
