10Grounding InstructionsGeneral InformationThis Band Saw must begrounded while in use to protect the operatorfrom electric shock. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance forelectric current to reduce the risk of electricshock. This tool is equipped with an electric cordhaving an equipment-grounding conductor and agrounding plug that looks similar to the plug inFigure 4. The plug must be inserted into amatching outlet that is properly installed andgrounded in accordance with all local codes andordinances.Do not modify the plug provided. If it will not fitthe outlet, have the proper outlet installed by aqualified electrician.Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk ofelectric shock. The conductor, with insulationhaving an outer surface that is green with orwithout yellow stripes, is the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or replacement ofthe electric cord or plug is necessary, do notconnect the equipment-grounding conductor to alive terminal.Figure 4Check with a qualified electrician or servicepersonnel if the grounding instructions are notcompletely understood, or if in doubt as towhether the tool is properly grounded.Repair or replace a damaged or worn cordimmediately.115 Volt OperationAs received from the factory, your bandsaw isready to run at 115-volt operation. Thisbandsaw, when wired for 115 volts, is intendedfor use on a circuit that has an outlet and a plugthat looks like the one illustrated in Figure 4. Atemporary adapter, like the adapter in Figure 5,may be used to connect this plug to a two-polereceptacle, as shown in Figure 5, if a properlygrounded outlet is not available. The temporaryadapter should only be used until a properlygrounded outlet can be installed by a qualifiedelectrician. This adapter is not applicable inCanada. The green colored rigid ear, lug, or tab, extending from the adapter, must be connectedto a permanent ground such as a properlygrounded outlet box, as shown in Figure 5.Figure 5Extension CordsUse only three wire extension cords that havethree-prong grounding plugs and three-polereceptacles that accept the tool’s plug.Make sure the cord is in good condition andheavy enough to carry the current your bandsaw will draw. An undersized cord will cause adrop in line voltage, resulting in loss of powerand overheating. Table 1 shows the correct sizeto use depending on cord length and the ampererating on your machine’s nameplate. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller thegauge number, the heavier the cord.Repair or replace a damaged or worn cordimmediately.Power Extension CordCurrant(Amps)LinevoltageCord lengthin feetCord gauge(AWG)0 to 25 1825 to 50 1650 to 100 160-6 120over 100 140 to 25 1825 to 50 1650 to 100 146-10 120over 100 120 to 25 1625 to 50 1650 to 100 1410-12 120over 100 120 to 25 1425 to 50 1212-16 120over 50 not recommendedTable 1
