16Blade TensionBlade tension is set with the blade tensionhandwheel (A, Fig. 19) and is performed followingblade replacement and periodically as the bladestretches from use.Disconnect machine frompower source before making any adjustments.Referring to Figure 19:1. Place the mode selection lever (F) in the FullTension position (see Figure 18).2. Set the blade tension by rotating thehandwheel (A) according to the arrowdirections shown in Figure 19.The gauge (B) indicates the approximatetension according to the width of the blade ininches. Initially, set the blade tension tocorrespond to the width of your blade. The JWBS-18QT comes with a 3/4" blade sothe tension should be set at 3/4" when usingthis blade. The JWBS-20QT comes with a 1" blade so thetension should be set at 1" when using thisblade.Note: For the JWBS-18QT the tension gaugecan also be seen from the front of the sawthrough the wheel when the upper door is open.As you become familiar with the saw, you may findit necessary to change the blade tension from theinitial setting.Keep in mind that too little or too much bladetension can cause blade breakage and/or poorcutting performance.Tip: When the band saw is not being used, placethe mode selection lever (J, Fig. 18) to the PartialTension position – this will prolong the blade’s life.Blade TrackingTracking refers to the position of the saw blade onthe wheels while the machine is in operation.Tracking has been factory-adjusted. However, itshould be checked occasionally, including afterevery blade change.Disconnect machine frompower source before making any adjustments.Important: The blade must be in Full or PartialTension positions before adjusting blade tracking(see previous section). Make sure the blade guidesand other parts of the machine will not interferewith the movement of the blade. To inspect and adjust tracking, proceed as follows:Figure 191. Open upper front door to expose the wheel.Rotate the wheel clockwise by hand andobserve the position of the blade on the wheelthrough the window (E, Fig. 19). The bladeshould ride upon the center of the wheel asshown in Figure 20.2. If the blade tends to move toward the edge ofthe wheel, loosen the wing nut (D, Fig. 19) andslightly rotate the knob (C, Fig. 19). Rotatingthe knob clockwise will cause the blade tomove toward the rear edge of the wheel.Rotating the knob counterclockwise will causethe blade to move toward the front edge of thewheel.Note: This adjustment is sensitive; perform it insmall increments and give the blade time toreact to the changes as you continue to rotatethe wheel.3. When the blade is tracking properly in thecenter of the wheel, re-tighten the wing nut(D, Fig. 19).4. Close the upper front door.Figure 20
