12Important Trailer Safety InformationSafety ChainsListed in the chart below are the different class sizes ofsafety chains and the rated load each chain must becapable of withstanding. Your trailer is equipped withsafety chains that meet the requirements of D.O.TRegulation 393.70.WARNING: Failure to properly attach safety chainsbetween the trailer and tow vehicle can result in arunaway trailer.WARNING: To avoid accidents, before trailering:• Hitch only to ball size marked on coupling.• Ball clamp must capture ball and lever or handwheel is fully clamped.• Cross safety chains under coupling.• Allow only enough slack for turns.Bottom ViewThe safety chains on your trailer are an addedinsurance that it will not become detached from the towvehicle. All safety chains are provided with an addedclasp to keep them from becoming accidentallydetached from the tow vehicle. Your trailer hitch on thetow vehicle should have two attaching holes or rings forattaching the safety chains, preferably one on eachside of the ball hitch. Crisscross the chains under thetongue, the chain on the left side of the trailer tongueattached to the right side of the ball hitch, the chain onthe right side of the trailer tongue attached to the leftside of the ball hitch. This prevents the trailer tongue from dropping to theroad should the coupler or ball hitch fail. The chainsshould be rigged as tight as possible with just enoughslack to allow tight turns to be made. This can beaccomplished by twisting the chain hook in a clockwiseor counterclockwise direction thus twisting the linkspacing and making the chain shorter. Also by keepingyour chains as short as possible you prevent them fromdragging on the road and wearing the chain links. If forany reason you find it necessary to replace a safetychain, use only original equipment.Load-Carrying CapacityLocated on the front left-hand side of the frame, (eitherthe inside or the outside) is the VIN (Vehicle Identifica-tion Number) tag. It will show the GVWR (Gross VehicleWeight Rating) which is the maximum load that can beapplied to the tires on the trailer. The GVWR and thecarrying capacity of the trailer are based on the tire sizeinstalled on the trailer. The GVWR is the maximum carrying capacity of thetrailer with its respective tires. It may not necessarilyequal the total GVWR of the trailer less the emptyweight of the trailer because there may be anothercontrolling factor such as frame strength that reducesthe carrying capacity to what is listed on the VIN tag.The tire label will list the tire size that was installed onthe trailer as original equipment when it was sold toyou, the consumer. It also lists the maximum carryingcapacity of the trailer.TRAILERCLASSTRAILER WEIGHTGVWR IN LBS.MINIMUM BRAKINGSTRENGTH IN LBS.I to 2,000 2,000II 2,000 to 3,500 3,500III 3,500 to 5,000 5,000IV 5,000 to 7,000 7,600Landa ECOS 7000 Operator’s Manual 9.801-316.0 - E
