164SAFE DRIVINGIn designing the Lybra, LANCIA hasmade every effort to come up with acar able to provide driver and pas-sengers with top-class levels of safety.Nevertheless it is always the behav-iour of the person at the wheel thatdetermines road safety.Below you will find some simple tipsto help you travel in safety under dif-ferent conditions. You will no doubtbe familiar with many of them al-ready but it will be useful to readthem all carefully.BEFORE GETTING BEHIND THEWHEEL– Make sure all lights, including theheadlights, are working properly.– Adjust the position of the seats,steering wheel, driving and door mir-rors properly for the best driving po-sition.– Carefully adjust head restraints sothe back of the head and not the napeof the neck is supported.– Make sure that nothing (mats,etc.) gets in the way of the pedalswhen they are pushed down.– Adjust the seat belts to match yourheight (see “Getting to know your car– Seat belts”).– Make sure that any child restraintsystems (child seats, carriers etc.) areproperly fixed on the rear seat.– Place any objects in the boot insuch a way that they cannot bethrown forwards in the event of an ac-cident.– Avoid placing light coloured ob-jects or sheets of paper on the dash-board to prevent reflections on thewindscreen.– Light eating will help keep yourreflexes prompt. Above all, do nothave anything alcoholic to drink. Cer-tain prescription drugs can impairyour driving skills: read the attachedliterature carefully.– Periodically, remember to checkthe fluid levels as shown in the para-graph “Repeated checks and checksbefore long trips” in this chapter.WHEN TRAVELLING– The first rule of safe driving is pru-dence.– Prudence also means putting your-self into a position where you can pre-dict wrong or imprudent behaviourfrom other drivers.– Stick closely to the rules of theroad in the particular country wherethe vehicle is being driven and, aboveall, do not exceed speed limits.– Ensure that, besides yourself, allthe other passengers in the car havetheir seat belts fastened, that childrenare sitting in the appropriate childseats and any animals in the car areplaced in suitable compartments.
