13Section 2: Operating3/27/12 PR1660, PR1672 & PR1690 Powered Rakes 314-216MTable of Contents! DANGERNever carry a person on the rake. A rider can fall and be ranover causing serious injury or death.! DANGERDo not operate a broken or bent driveline. Such drivelines canbrake apart while rotating at high speeds causing seriousinjury or death. Always remove Powered Rake from serviceuntil driveline is repaired or replaced.! WARNINGAlways disengage PTO, engage parking brake, shut tractorengine off, remove switch key and wait for driveline to come toa complete stop before dismounting from tractor.! WARNINGDo not use rake to lift or carry objects. Lifting and/or carryingobjects can brake the rake and/or cause serious bodily injury.! CAUTIONDo not over speed PTO or machine damage may result. Thisrake is designed to be used only with a tractor having a 540RPM rear PTO.General Operating InstructionsFirst completely familiarize yourself with the Operator’sManual. Then complete the Operator’s checklist, properly attach the Powered Rake to your tractor, makeinitial depth setting, level settings and roller angleadjustments. After completing the above, you will need to choose awork site, perform operational safety checks and makefinal adjustments before using your Land Pride PoweredRake. It’s now time for a running operational safety check. Makecertain that the tractor’s park brake is engaged, PTO isdisengaged and the Powered Rake is resting on theground. Start the tractor and back off engine rpm toapproximately one-quarter throttle. Using the rear draftlink hydraulic control, lift the Powered Rake about halfway off the ground and then engage the rear PTO. Ifeverything is running smoothly, increase throttle speeduntil you have reached full operating speed. Neverengage the tractor PTO at full engine rpm., damage tothe driveline and/or Powered Rake could occur. To make final adjustments, choose a work site that is dryand allows you to make at least a 50 ft. straight run.Raise the Powered Rake half way off the ground,IMPORTANT: Shut off all power, disengage PTO,set park brake and remove ignition key any time thePowered Rake is not operating properly or needsadjustment.disengage the tractor PTO, release the park brake andtravel to your starting point. Travel speed should bebetween 3 and 5 mph.Once at the site, idle the tractor engine, engage the PTOand then increase engine speed until the tractor is at full540 rpm operating speed. Begin traveling forward whilegently lowering the running Powered Rake to the ground.Make slight changes to the tractor’s ground speed as youtravel forward to determine the desired ground finish.Generally, a slower speed results in a finer finish, while ahigher speed results in a coarser finish. Excessiveground speed may result in dirt or material passing overthe top of the material control deflector or too muchmaterial being windrowed off to the side. Powered Rakesdo not perform well in wet sticky soil. Avoid making sharpturns or backing-up when in contact with the ground.Normal operating rake angle is 15 degrees left or right. However, you may want to make subtle hydraulicadjustments to the roller angle to determine varyingeffect on the surface finish. You can also vary the effect on the surface finish bysetting the material control deflector height above theroller. The material control deflector sifts out clods, rocksand other debris as the soil passes over the top of theroller. Adjusting the blade down decreases the gapbetween the deflector and roller and will sift out moreobjects for a finer soil finish. Adjusting the blade upallows more clods, rocks and debris to pass over theroller and produces a coarser soil finish.Set the working depth and level the rake at the castergauge wheels and not with the tractor. Normally a one-inch cultivation depth is considered ideal for a surfacefinish. Make adjustments to the working depth if toomany rocks or excessive debris pass under the roller bychanging the C-spacers on the gauge wheel spindles.Increase working depth by moving the spacers frombelow the support arms to above the support arms.Decrease working depth by moving the spacers fromabove the gauge wheel support arms to below thesupport arms. The Powered Rake should also be set to operate level. Ithas a tendency to go in deeper on the driveline side (leftside) because that is the heavy side of the rake.Compensate for this by changing the C-spacers on theright gauge wheel so that it is set approximately 1”deeper than the left gauge wheel. After you have traveled 50 feet, properly shut down thetractor and Powered Rake to inspect the finish anddetermine what, if any, additional adjustments need to bemade. Check for any foreign objects that may bewrapped around the roller or lodged between movingparts.Remember that the right finish is achieved through acombination of proper soil moisture conditions, operatingdepth, ground speed, material control deflector openingand roller angle. Your Powered Raking capabilities willimprove rapidly with experience.
