8Removing or installing planer bladesCAUTION:• Tighten the blade installation bolts carefully whenattaching the blades to the tool. A loose installationbolt can be dangerous. Always check to see theyare tightened securely.• Handle the blades very carefully. Use gloves orrags to protect your fingers or hands whenremoving or installing the blades.• Use only the Makita wrench provided to remove orinstall the blades. Failure to do so may result inovertightening or insufficient tightening of theinstallation bolts. This could cause an injury. For tool with standard planer bladesFig.4Fig.5Fig.6To remove the blades on the drum, unscrew theinstallation bolts with the socket wrench. The drumcover comes off together with the blades. To install the blades, first clean out all chips or foreignmatter adhering to the drum or blades. Use blades ofthe same dimensions and weight, or drumoscillation/vibration will result, causing poor planingaction and, eventually, tool breakdown.Place the blade on the gauge base so that the bladeedge is perfectly flush with the inside edge of the gaugeplate. Place the adjusting plate on the blade, thensimply press in the heel of the adjusting plate flush withthe back side of the gauge base and tighten two screwson the adjusting plate. Now slip the heel of the adjustingplate into the drum groove, then fit the drum cover on it.Tighten all the installation bolts evenly and alternatelywith the socket wrench. For tool with mini planer blades1. Remove the existing blade, if the tool has been inuse, carefully clean the drum surfaces and thedrum cover. To remove the blades on the drum, unscrew the three installation bolts with thesocket wrench. The drum cover comes offtogether with the blades.Fig.72. To install the blades, loosely attach the adjustingplate to the set plate with the pan head screwsand set the mini planer blade on the gauge baseso that the cutting edge of the blade is perfectlyflush with the inside flank of the gauge plate.Fig.83. Set the adjusting plate/set plate on the gaugebase so that the planer blade locating lugs on theset plate rest in the mini planer blade groove, then press in the heel of the adjusting plate flushwith the back side of the gauge base and tightenthe pan head screws.4. It is important that the blade sits flush with theinside flank of the gauge plate, the planer bladelocating lugs sit in the blade groove and the heelof the adjusting plate is flush with the back side ofthe gauge base. Check this alignment carefully toensure uniform cutting.5. Slip the heel of the adjusting plate into the grooveof the drum.6. Set the drum cover over the adjusting plate/setplate and screw in the three hex flange head boltsso that a gap exists between the drum and theset plate to slide the mini planer blade intoposition. The blade will be positioned by theplaner blade locating lugs on the set plate.Fig.97. The blade's lengthwise adjustment will need to bemanually positioned so that the blade ends areclear and equidistant from the housing on oneside and the metal bracket on the other.8. Tighten the three hex flange head bolts (with thesocket wrench provided) and rotate the drum tocheck clearances between the blade ends andthe tool body.9. Check the three hex flange head bolts for finaltightness.10. Repeat procedures 1 - 9 for other blade.
