17FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTIONCAUTION:• Always be sure that the tool is switched off andunplugged before adjusting or checking function on thetool.Blade guard (Fig. 3 & 4)When lowering the handle, the blade guard rises auto-matically. The blade guard returns to its original positionwhen the cut is completed and the handle is raised.NEVER DEFEAT OR REMOVE THE BLADE GUARDOR THE SPRING WHICH ATTACHES TO THE GUARD.In the interest of your personal safety, always maintainthe blade guard in good condition. Any irregular opera-tion of the blade guard should be corrected immediately.Check to assure spring loaded return action of guard.NEVER USE THE TOOL IF THE BLADE GUARD ORSPRING ARE DAMAGED, FAULTY OR REMOVED.DOING SO IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSESERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY.If the see-through blade guard becomes dirty, or sawdustadheres to it in such a way that the blade and/or work-piece is no longer easily visible, unplug the saw andclean the guard carefully with a damp cloth. Do not usesolvents or any petroleum-based cleaners on the plasticguard.If the blade guard is especially dirty and vision throughthe guard is impaired, use the supplied socket wrench toloosen the hex bolt holding the center cover. Loosen thehex bolt by turning it counterclockwise and raise theblade guard and center cover. With the blade guard sopositioned, cleaning can be more completely and effi-ciently accomplished. When cleaning is complete,reverse procedure above and secure bolt. Do not removespring holding blade guard. If guard becomes discoloredthrough age or UV light exposure, contact a Makita ser-vice center for a new guard. DO NOT DEFEAT ORREMOVE GUARD.Positioning kerf board (Fig. 5 & 6)This tool is provided with the kerf boards in the turn baseto minimize tearing on the exit side of a cut. The kerfboards are factory adjusted so that the saw blade doesnot contact the kerf boards. Before use, adjust the kerfboards as follows:First, unplug the tool. Loosen all the screws (2 each onleft and right) securing the kerf boards. Re-tighten themonly to the extent that the kerf boards can still be easilymoved by hand. Lower the handle fully and push in thestopper pin to lock the handle in the lowered position.Loosen the knob which secures the slide poles. Pull thecarriage toward you fully. Adjust the kerf boards so thatthe kerf boards just contact the sides of the blade teeth.Tighten the front screws (do not tighten firmly). Push thecarriage toward the guide fence fully and adjust the kerfboards so that the kerf boards just contact the sides ofblade teeth. Tighten the rear screws (do not tightenfirmly).After adjusting the kerf boards, release the stopper pinand raise the handle. Then tighten all the screwssecurely.CAUTION:• Before and after changing the bevel angle, alwaysadjust the kerf boards as described above.Maintaining maximum cutting capacity (Fig. 7 & 8)Unplug the tool before any adjustment is attempted. Thistool is factory adjusted to provide the maximum cuttingcapacity for a 255 mm saw blade.When installing a new blade, always check the lower limitposition of the blade and if necessary, adjust it as follows:First, unplug the tool. Push the carriage toward the guidefence fully and lower the handle completely. Use thesocket wrench to turn the adjusting bolt until the periph-ery of the blade extends slightly below the top surface ofthe turn base at the point where the front face of theguide fence meets the top surface of the turn base.With the tool unplugged, rotate the blade by hand whileholding the handle all the way down to be sure that theblade does not contact any part of the lower base. Re-adjust slightly, if necessary.CAUTION:• After installing a new blade, always be sure that theblade does not contact any part of the lower base whenthe handle is lowered completely. Always do this withthe tool unplugged.Stopper arm (Fig. 9)The lower limit position of the blade can be easilyadjusted with the stopper arm. To adjust it, rotate thestopper arm in the direction of the arrow as shown in thefigure. Adjust the adjusting screw so that the blade stopsat the desired position when lowering the handle fully.Adjusting the miter angle (Fig. 10)Loosen the grip by turning counterclockwise. Turn theturn base while pressing down the lock lever. When youhave moved the grip to the position where the pointerpoints to the desired angle on the miter scale, securelytighten the grip clockwise.CAUTION:• When turning the turn base, be sure to raise the handlefully.• After changing the miter angle, always secure the turnbase by tightening the grip firmly.Adjusting the bevel angle (Fig. 11 & 12)To adjust the bevel angle, loosen the lever at the rear ofthe tool counterclockwise. Unlock the arm by pushing thehandle somewhat strongly in the direction that you intendto tilt the saw blade.Tilt the saw blade until the pointer points to the desiredangle on the bevel scale. Then tighten the lever clock-wise firmly to secure the arm.CAUTION:• When tilting the saw blade, be sure to raise the handlefully.• After changing the bevel angle, always secure the armby tightening the lever clockwise.• When changing bevel angles, be sure to position thekerf boards appropriately as explained in the “Position-ing kerf boards” section.Switch actionCAUTION:• Before plugging in the tool, always check to see thatthe switch trigger actuates properly and returns to the“OFF” position when released.• When not using the tool, remove the lock-off button andstore it in a secure place. This prevents unauthorizedoperation. |
