3SuperUniti Installation and Connection2.4.2 Audio Signal OutputsSuperUniti provides audio signal outputs for a variety ofapplications. Connections to the outputs are made via thesocket types listed in the following table:Output Type SocketDigital Digital S/PDIF 75Ω BNCPreamplifier Analogue stereo 4-Pin DINSubwoofer Analogue Stereo RCA phonosNote: The digital output is intended for connection to adigital to analogue converter or preamplifier incorporatingdigital inputs so that SuperUniti can be used as a digitalsource device for an existing system. The output can beswitched on and off from a setup menu. See Section 4.7.External analogue inputs to SuperUniti are not availablefrom the digital output.Note: The digital output is taken before the SuperUnitivolume and balance controls so the output signal will notreflect SuperUniti volume and balance control or mutefunction. The output always reflects the selected digitalinput signal.Note: The preamplifier and subwoofer outputs are takenafter the SuperUniti volume and balance controls soperipheral equipment connected to them will respondto SuperUniti volume and balance control changes. Theoutput always reflects the selected input signal.2.5 Speaker OutputsA set of stereo speaker connection sockets is provided onthe SuperUniti rear panel. Custom Naim Audio loudspeakerconnectors are supplied to make the connection and inorder to comply with current European safety regulationsthese should always be used. Naim Audio speaker cablewill provide the best results, however, a range of speakercable types may be used without risk of damage to theamplifier. Contact your local Naim retailer for furtheradvice. Use equal lengths of speaker cable for eachchannel.Ensure when connecting speakers that they are “in phase”.That is, the positive and negative connection orientationat both the speaker and amplifier ends of the cable is thesame for both channels.2.6 Headphone OutputSuperUniti is fitted on its front panel with a 3.5mm stereoheadphone socket. Insertion of a headphone plug willmute the speaker, subwoofer and preamplifier outputs.Note: SuperUniti controls and stores volume settingsseparately for headphones and speakers.2.7 Signal Ground SwitchSuperUniti is fitted on its rear panel with a Signal Groundswitch offering two positions: Chassis or Floating. Selectthe Chassis position unless SuperUniti is connected in a hi-fisystem incorporating another earthed source component,or mains “hum” is audible through the loudspeakers.Contact your retailer, distributor or Naim for advice ifnecessary.Note: “Connected” in the context above means ananalogue audio signal cable that includes an earthconnection. The SuperUniti digital inputs and output areisolated from the mains earth regardless of the SignalGround switch.Note: All Naim CD players are earthed so the SignalGround switch should be set to floating if one is connectedin the system. No damage will be done if the wrong Signal Groundposition is chosen, however the system sound quality maybe compromised.Note: The SuperUniti negative analogue input and outputconnections for each channel are common. The mainsearth (ground) should always be connected regardless ofwhat other equipment is used. The mains earth primarilygrounds the case and the electrostatic screen within thetransformer, and is only connected to the signal negative ifthe Signal Ground switch is set to Chassis. In order to avoidhum loops, the signal negative of the whole system shouldbe connected to the mains earth in one place only.2.8 USB/iPod InterfaceThe SuperUniti is fitted with a front panel USB interfaceintended for the connection of Apple iPod and iPhonemodels and USB memory hardware carrying audio files. TheUSB interface should not be used for any other purpose.Depending on the setup options chosen (see Section4.3.5), iPod and iPhone batteries will be charged whenconnected to the USB interface.2.9 Network ConnectionsThe SuperUniti can be connected to a TCP/IP network viaeither a wired or wireless connection. Network connectionenables the SuperUniti to play internet radio data streamsor play audio files stored on UPnP™ servers such as theNaim UnitiServe and HDX, and appropriately configuredcomputers and network drives.2.9.1 Wired Network ConnectionThe SuperUniti is fitted on its rear panel with a standardEthernet socket. For wired network connection this socketshould be connected to a spare Ethernet socket on yournetwork router.Note: Ethernet-over-mains hardware may be used andprovides a simple and convenient method of wired home
