223. When the battery is being installed or removed makesure that the positive and negative terminals do notcome in contact with metal tractor parts at the same timeor severe damage may result.4. Battery connections must be kept clean and tight at alltimes. Loose cables will cause eventual battery failure.Keep terminal covers in place.5. Use soap and water to clean the battery as required.Care must be taken to prevent soap and water fromgetting inside battery.6. Clean the terminal contact surfaces with a batteryterminal brush or steel wool.7. Tighten cables securely to battery terminals.8. Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or chassis lubricantto terminals and cable ends after assembly to preventcorrosion.7—MAINTENANCETo avoid possible serious bodily injury, beforeperforming and adjustments, maintenance, or lu-brication, place all controls in “neutral”, lower themowers to the ground engage parking brake, turnignition switch off and remove key.7.1—GENERAL MAINTENANCEThe long trouble free life of your machine depends on themaintenance it receives. Set-up a maintenance program foryour I-Trim to cover the following points:Keep tractor and decks clean (including rear rims).Keep all moving parts properly lubricated (sec. 7.14).Keep all parts properly adjusted.Inspect for loose, worn or damaged parts.Keep shields in place at all times.Keep tires properly inflated. If your inspection reveals worn or damaged parts replacethese parts before operating machine or before actualbreakdown occurs. To avoid injury from hot, high-pressure oil, neverdisconnect hydraulic hoses with attachments inup position. Never rub hands across tubes, hosesor fittings to check for leaks. Hydraulic fluid es-caping under pressure can have sufficient forceto penetrate the skin.7.2—ASSEMBLY AND DISASSEMBLYUse the illustrations in the parts catalog as reference fordisassembly and assembly of components. Always maintainrelative position of parts when disassembling. Clean andlubricate individual parts and components as required.7.3—BATTERY1. Make certain the ignition switch is in the “off” position andthe keys have been removed.2. Refer to section 1.4 in this manual for batteryspecifications.Always wear protective glasses or goggles andprotective clothing when working with batteries.Always connect the “ground” (black) cable lastand remove it first whenever performing anymaintenance.Batteries contain sulfuric acid and generate ex-plosive mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen gases.Keep any device, which may cause sparks orflames away from the battery to prevent explo-sions.Read and follow the battery manufacture’s in-structions on safety, maintenance and installa-tion procedures.
