Taking Photographs—Advanced Photography92Shutter-Priority AutoIn shutter-priority auto, shutter-speed is controlled by rotating the commanddial. Options range from 8 s to 1/2000 s in increments equivalent to 1 EV (1 step).Shutter-speed displayed in controlpanel and monitorRotateIf the selected shutter-speed would result in the photograph being under- orover-exposed, the shutter speed displayed in the control panel and monitor willflash when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Choose anothershutter speed and try again. At shutter speeds of 1/ 4 s or slower, the shutter-speed indicator in the monitor will turn yellow to show that mottling (“noise”)may appear in the final photograph. We recommend that you either choosea faster shutter speed or turn noise reduction on ( 128).Shutter-Speed LimitationsAt CONTINUOUS settings of Ultra HS and Movie ( 109), the camera takesa fixed number of frames per second. Shutter speed can not be set to valuesslower than the frame advance rate (1/ 30 s and 1 /15 s, respectively).Faster Shutter SpeedsFor shutter speeds faster than 1/ 2000 s, choose an exposure mode of aperture-priority auto (see opposite), select the largest aperture setting (smallest f/-num-ber), and zoom the camera all the way out. If lighting is sufficient, shutterspeeds of up to 1/ 4000 s can be achieved.
