GPRS is a data bearer that enables wireless access to data networkssuch as the Internet.EGPRS (enhanced GPRS), also known as EDGE (enhanced data rates for globalevolution), is similar to GPRS. For more information on the availability of EGPRSand data transfer speed, contact your service provider.When you have selected GPRS as a data bearer, the device uses EGPRS instead ofGPRS if it is available in the network. You cannot select between EGPRS and GPRSin your device, but for some applications, you may be able to select either GPRSor GSM data (CSD—circuit switched data) as the data bearer. The data bearer ispart of the preferred access point and can be changed in Configuration settings(see "Configuration settings," page 45).The applications that may use GPRS are MMS, instant messaging, browsing sessions,remote SyncML, Java application downloading, and the PC dial-up (for example,Internet connections).Before you can use GPRS technology, contact your service provider for availabilityof and subscription to the GPRS service, and save the GPRS settings for each ofthe applications used over GPRS.GPRS connectionSelect Menu > Settings > Connectivity > GPRS > GPRS connection and one ofthe following:Always online—Set the device to automatically register to a GPRS network whenyou switch the device on.When needed—Set the device to establish GPRS registration and connectionwhen an application using GPRS needs it and to close the connection when youend the application.GPRS modem settingsYou can connect the device via infrared or a data cable connection to a compatiblePC and use the device as a modem to enable EGPRS connectivity from the PC.To define the settings for EGPRS connections from your PC, select Menu >Settings > Connectivity > GPRS > GPRS modem settings and one of the following:Active access point—Activate the access point that you want to use.Edit active access point—Change the access point settings:• Select Alias for access point. Enter the name that you would like for theactivated access point, and select OK.
