Prolong battery lifeMany features in your device increase the demand onbattery power and reduce the battery life time. To savebattery power, note the following:● Features that use Bluetooth technology, or allowingsuch features to run in the background while usingother features, increase the demand on batterypower. To prolong the operating time of yourdevice, turn the Bluetooth technology off when youdo not need it.● Features that use wireless LAN (WLAN), or allowingsuch features to run in the background while usingother features, increase the demand on batterypower. WLAN on your Nokia device switches offwhen you are not trying to connect, not connectedto another access point, or not scanning foravailable networks. To further reduce batteryconsumption, you can specify that your device doesnot scan, or scans less often, for available networksin the background. WLAN switches off in betweenbackground scans. See "Wireless LAN", p. 26. WhenScan for networks is set to Never, the WLANavailability icon is not shown in the standby mode. However, you can still manually scan for availableWLAN networks and connect to WLAN networks asusual.● If you have set Packet data connection to Whenavailable in connection settings, and there is nopacket data coverage (GPRS), the device periodicallytries to establish a packet data connection, whichcauses increased demand on battery power. Toprolong the operating time of your device, selectPacket data connection > When needed.● The Maps application downloads new mapinformation when you scroll to new areas on themap, which increases the demand on battery power. You can prevent the device from automaticallydownloading new maps. See "Maps", p. 63.● If the signal strength of the cellular network variesmuch in your area, your device must scan for theavailable network repeatedly. This increases thedemand on battery power. If the network mode is set to dual mode in thenetwork settings, the device searches for the UMTSnetwork. If it is not available, the device uses theavailable GSM network. To only use the GSMnetwork, press , and select Tools > Settings >Phone > Network > Network mode > GSM.● The backlight of the display increases the demandon battery power. To change the time-out afterwhich the backlight is switched off, press , andselect Tools > Settings > General >Personalisation > Display > Light time-out. Toadjust the light sensor that observes the lightingconditions and adjusts the brightness of the display,in the display settings, select Light sensor.14 Useful information
