9HOW TO USE THE MANUAL MODEBegin stepping to activate the console.The stepper requires no batteries or externalpower source. Power is supplied to the step-per by a generator while you are stepping. Toactivate the console, begin stepping. After a fewseconds, the console displays will light. A tonewill then sound and the console will be ready foruse.Select the manual mode.When the power isturned on, themanual mode willbe selected. If youhave selected aprogram or theiFIT.com mode,select the manual mode by pressing the ProgramSelect button repeatedly until a staircase appearsin the matrix and the indicator above the iFIT.combutton is not lit.Begin stepping and change the steppingspeed as desired.While you arestepping, changethe steppingspeed by pressingthe Slower orFaster button.When the Slowerbutton is pressed, the resistance of the pedalswill increase and your stepping speed willdecrease; when the Faster button is pressed, theresistance will decrease and you will have toincrease your stepping speed to prevent bothpedals from sinking to the floor. The steppingspeed can be decreased or increased in incre-ments of 5 steps per minute. To change the step-ping speed quickly, press one of the Steps PerMinute buttons.Note: After the Slower, Faster, or Steps PerMinute buttons are pressed, it will take a momentfor the stepper to reach the selected setting.Make sure to continue stepping while changingthe stepping speed.Monitor your progress with the matrix, theTraining Zone bar, and the two displays.The matrix—When the manualmode or theiFIT.com mode isselected, the matrixwill display a stair-case. As you exer-cise, the indicators in the staircase will light, oneat a time, until the entire staircase is lit. This cyclewill then repeat.The Training Zonebar—The TrainingZone bar will showthe approximateintensity level ofyour exercise. Forexample, if three orfour indicators in the bar are lit, the bar shows thatthe intensity level is ideal for fat burning.The left display—The left display willshow the elapsedtime, the total num-ber of steps youhave completed,and the approxi-mate number of vertical feet that you havestepped. The display will change from one numberto the next every few seconds, as shown by theindicators around the display. Note: When a pro-gram is selected, the display will show the timeremaining in the program and the time remainingin the current segment of the program instead ofthe elapsed time.The right display—The right displaywill show your step-ping speed and theapproximate num-bers of fat caloriesand calories youhave burned (see FAT BURNING on page 17).The display will change from one number to thenext every few seconds, as shown by the indica-tors around the display. The display will also showyour heart rate when you use the handgrip pulsesensor or the optional chest pulse sensor. Note:Each time the stepping speed changes, the dis-play will show the stepping speed.4321
