Using the Passport 8100 Modules1-14 204515-CRedundant Passport 8190SM ModulesWhen you install two Passport 8190SM modules in a Passport 8000 Serieschassis, one provides the active CPU functions for the switch; the CPU subsystemon the other module is in standby mode. If the active CPU fails, the standby CPUassumes the CPU functions for the switch within 1 second. Then the modulerelearns the routing databases for the switch. If two Passport 8190SM modules are installed in the chassis when you turn onswitch power, the module in slot 5 becomes the active CPU; the module in slot 6is in standby mode.Redundant Power SuppliesA Passport 8000 Series chassis supports redundant power supplies. Both AC andDC power supplies are available, and they may be combined in the same chassis. The Passport 8010 Chassis with more than six installed modules requires aminimum of two power supplies for a nonredundant configuration. A redundantconfiguration for such a chassis requires three power supplies. In a chassis with a nonredundant power supply configuration, if one power supplyfails, the system loses power and network connectivity. In a chassis with two installed power supplies, you can add a third power supplywithout removing power to the chassis. In a chassis with a redundant powerconfiguration, you can hot-swap any one power supply while the chassiscontinues to operate with no interruption of service (Table 1-1).
