DMS-100 Family EIU User Guide 03.01117Appendix C: Using FTPThis appendix provides information on using file transfer protocol (FTP) withthe Ethernet interface unit (EIU). FTP is an internationally accepted protocolfor exchanging files between computing devices. Exchanged files can be inmany formats. Further, computing devices can be hosts with different and evenincompatible file systems.CAUTIONPossible loss of network securityUsing the Ethernet interface unit (EIU) and a telnet or filetransfer protocol (FTP) session to establish a maintenanceand administration position (MAP) session can introduce asecurity risk to both the DMS node and its subtendingnetwork. When establishing and operating a MAP session in this way, there is limited security for clear text (user identification andpasswords) and for Internet Protocol (IP) addresses forscreening. This limited security makes an open local areanetwork (LAN) vulnerable to entry by unauthorized persons.Nortel recommends that the operating company, as aminimal precaution, integrate intermediate security serverswith encryption to avoid unauthorized access to the switch. For alternative approaches, contact your Nortelrepresentative to discuss state-of-the-art secure OA&M datacommunications equipment products.By using the EIU, telnet, and FTP software, the operatingcompany assumes any and all risks associated with theimplementation and use of this hardware and software.
