TRanspoRTaTIonPaddling kayaks and canoes may bethe most graceful way to explore ourwaters. But handling boats on land canbe cumbersome. Thankfully, properequipment makes transportation easyand safe.Ideally your canoe should be carriedcockpit-side down, but kayaks can betransported cockpit-side down, on theirsides with appropriate rack accessories(like Stackers or J-style hull supports) orcockpit-side up using cradles or saddles. No matter how you carry your boat,be sure to run two straps around thehull to the roof rack in addition to linesfrom the bow and stern to both bum-pers of your vehicle. Straps wrappedtoo-tightly around the hull can warpyour boat (especially in hot weather).Keep the lines snug, and take care not toharm your boat. The manufacturer of your roofrack may have special instructions andweight recommendations for carryingboats on your vehicle. Check with therack manufacturer if you have questions. If you do not have a rack system, soft rack pads can be used between theboat and your car top. Run straps overthe canoe or kayak and through the cardoors to secure the boat to the roof, inaddition to tying it to your bumpers atthe bow and stern. Remember strapsshould be secure, but not overly tight.Stop and check your load as you drive.sToRageYour new boat is carefully crafted toensure optimum durability. But im-proper storage can quickly degrade hullshape, color and UV-protection. Storageis key!Above all else, store your kayak outof the sun. Waxes and protectants aresimply not enough–they will eventuallywash off the boat into our waterways.Signs of sun damage include fading,a loss of flexibility and cracking thatcannot be repaired. Keep your kayak orcanoe inside or under cover, especiallyif you live in a sunny climate. A tarpproperly suspended above the boat willprotect the boat from ultraviolet light.Do not cover your boat by laying atarp directly on it. With the heat of thesun, the tarp creates an oven that candamage, distort or discolor the hull.Simply leave an air space to allow forair circulation.| 06On the side using Stackers, inset using J-styleCockpit-side down on rack, inset using pads onlyRight-side up using a Hullavator, inset usingsaddles
