A decoder decodesthese signals into 5.1 surround and multi-channel signals.Channel (when referring to DVD)Sound is divided into channels based on the sound’s role. For example, 5.1 channel³Front speakers—1 left channel and 1 right channel³Center speaker—1 channel³Surround speakers—1 left channel and 1 right channel³Subwoofer—1 channelk0.1 (the ratio of bass to the total amountof sound output)Examples as shown in the on-screen menus3/2 .1ch.1: Subwoofer signal(not displayed if there is no subwoofer signal)0: No surround1: Mono surround2: Stereo surround (left/right)1: Center2: Front leftiFront right3: Front leftiFront rightiCenterDolby Pro LogicA surround system where a 4-channel audio track is recorded as2 channels and then is restored to 4 channels for play. The surroundchannel is monaural.DTS Digital SurroundThis surround system is used in many movie theaters around theworld. The separation between channels is good and the compres-sion ratio is low, so realistic sound effects are possible.DTS soundtracks are produced with the assumption that all chan-nels will be used.Dynamic rangeDynamic range is the difference between the lowest level of soundthat can be heard above the noise of the equipment and the highestlevel of sound before distortion occurs.FinalizeThis process allows DVD-R to be played on compatible equipment.Frame and fieldFrames are the still pictures that go together to make a moving pic-ture. A frame is made up of two fields.³A frame still is made up of two alternating fields, so the picture mayappear blurred, but overall quality is high.³A field still is not blurred, but it has only half the information of aframe still so picture quality is lower.Linear PCMThis is a form of signal that has been digitized without compressingit. CDs are recorded with 44.1 kHz/16 bit PCM, while DVDs usePCM between 48 kHz/16 bit and 96 kHz /24 bit, allowing reproduc-tion of greater quality sound. The linear PCM signals output from the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT,OPTICAL terminal are stereo (2 channel).Frame Field FieldComponent video output (Y, P B, PR )The luminance (Y) and color difference (P B and P R) signals are sep-arated for output so colors are reproduced faithfully. The output formdiffers from that for 480P progressive output.DecoderA decoder restores the coded audio and video signals on DVDs tonormal. This is called decoding.Direct navigatorThis is a list of programs you have recorded. You can select pro-grams from the list to view. The list also shows the date and time ofrecording, the channel, and the titles of titled programs. The select-ed program is played in the background, making selection evensimpler.Dolby DigitalThis is a method of coding digital signals developed by Dolby Labo-ratories. Apart from stereo (2-channel) audio, these signals can alsobe 5.1-channel audio. A large amount of audio information can berecorded on one disc using this method.
