COMSPHERE 6800 Series Nework Management System1-38 August 1994 6800-A2-GB21-10Configuring ChannelsOnce the channel group is established, channels can be assigned to it. A channel is one individualvoice and/or data path within a channel group. Channels are configured after channel groups areallocated. The following types of channels can be configured within each channel group.Synchronous dataAsynchronous dataVoiceDS0low bit-rate voiceexpanded voiceDDS-ocuDDS-dsuTo configure channels, perform the following steps.1. Choose a channel group for the channel (one that has the same endpoints and desiredrouting attributes). If one does not exist, create one.To make sure that the channel group where the channel is being configured has adequatebandwidth, execute the Channel Group Summary (cgs) command to see how muchbandwidth (capacity) was allocated to the channel group. If no bandwidth has beenallocated to the channel group, execute the Make Channel Group Connection (mkcgc)command to do so.Execute the Channel Summary (cs) command for one of the channel group’s endpoints.Add the rates of all the connected channels in the channel group. Subtract the total rates ofall connected channels from the channel group’s capacity. The difference is the channelgroup’s available bandwidth.2. Make sure that the channel has two compatible channel endpoints. Compatible channelendpoints are any two channel endpoints of the same type; a DS0 channel endpoint and a24 kbps, 32 kbps, or 64 kbps voice channel endpoint; or a DS0 channel endpoint and a56 kbps synchronous data channel endpoint. Check this by running the Change ChannelModule Type (chcmt) command or Hardware Module Summary (hms) command to see thetype of channel module installed for the desired channel then run to each endpoint.3. Execute the Change Channel Configuration (chcc) command to define and configure (orreconfigure) channels and channel parameters. This will configure both the channelendpoints. You can also decide to have the bandwidth allocated to the channel upon thesuccessful completion of the configuration request, or leave the channel in an idle state.4. Execute the Make Channel Connection (mkcc) command to connect the channel, or moreaccurately, to allocate bandwidth for the channel. You may now want to execute theDisplay Channel Configuration (dscc) command to display the parameters of the channelendpoints. This allows you to make sure that you have configured the channel correctly. For detailed information on these commands, refer to the COMSPHERE 6800 Series NetworkManagement System Multiplexer Command Reference Manual.
