Wall Penetration FramingCombustible Wall PenetrationFrame a hole in a combustible wall for an interior wallshield firestop, (Figure 6.2) whenever a wall is penetrated.Use same size framing materials as those used in the wallconstruction. The wall shield firestop maintains minimumclearances and prevents cold air infiltration.Non-Combustible Wall PenetrationIf the hole being penetrated is surrounded by noncombus-tible materials such as concrete, a hole with diameter oneinch greater than the pipe is acceptable.Whenever a non-combustible wall is penetrated, the wallshield firestop is only required on one side and no heatshield is necessary. If your local inspector requires the wall shield firestop onboth sides, then both wall shield firestops must have a heatshield attached to them.Fire Risk.Explosion Risk.Maintain vent clearance to combustibles asspecified.• Do not pack air space with insulation orother materials.Failure to keep insulation or other materialsaway from vent pipe may cause fire.Figure 6.1 Pipe Clearances1 in.
