Leaks must be repaired at once to prevent damage tothe heater. NEVER use petroleum-based stop-leakcompounds.To perform hydrostatic test:1. Connect fill water supply. With bleed valve open, fill heater with water. When water flows from bleedvalve, shut off water. Close bleed valve. Carefullyfill the rest of the system, making sure to eliminateany entrapped air by using high-point vents. Closefeed valve. Test at standard operating pressure forat least 24 hours.2. Make sure constant gauge pressure has beenmaintained throughout test.3. Check for leaks. Repair if found.Raypak Integral Cold WaterProtectionXTherm heaters are equipped with an integral coldwater protection system. Units equipped with the dualinjector pump system are designed to operate withheater inlet water temperatures down to 50°F continu-ous. Under start up conditions the dual injector systemcan operate with fluid temperatures down to 32°F.Operation at lower temperatures will create unwar-rantable damage to the injector pumps. XTherm WHand WHP models equipped with single injector pumpsare designed for typical domestic hot water and com-mercial pool heating operating conditions respectively.Contact your local representative or the factory forapplications assistance.Hydronic HeatingPump SelectionThe heater is equipped with an integral cold water pro-tection system that includes dual modulating injectorpumps to pull the required flow from the system loopand a heater pump, sized by the factory, for the opti-mal ΔT across the primary heat exchanger. Thesystem is designed for continuous return temperaturesfrom 50°F to 180°F.CAUTION: Damage due to internal condensationmay occur if the heater inlet water temperature doesnot exceed 50°F (22°C) within 7 minutes of start-up.Feedwater RegulatorRaypak recommends that a feedwater regulator be in-stalled and set at 12 psi minimum pressure at thehighest point of the system. Install a check valve orback flow device upstream of the regulator, with amanual shut-off valve as required by local codes.PipingAll high points should be vented. A heater installedabove radiation level must be provided with a low wa-ter cut-off device (sales order option F-10). Thisheater, when used in connection with a refrigerationsystem, must be installed so that the chilled medium ispiped in parallel with the heater with appropriatevalves to prevent the chilled medium from entering theheater. The piping system of a hot water heater connected toheating coils located in air handling units where theymay be exposed to circulating refrigerated air, must beequipped with flow control valves or other automaticmeans to prevent gravity circulation of the heaterwater during the cooling cycle. It is highly recommend-ed that the piping be insulated.Air-Separation/Expansion TankAll heaters should be equipped with a properly sizedexpansion tank and air separator fitting as shown inFig. 13.Three-Way ValvesXTherm heaters have an integral cold water protectionsystem to maintain required temperatures and flowrates.Fig. 13: Air-Separation/Expansion TankWARNING: Three-way valves intended to regulatesystem water temperatures by reducing flow in theboiler should not be used.California Hot Water Supply, Inc.(800) 249-724415
