Freeze ProtectionThe Raypak electronic temperature control includes afreeze protection feature. In the event the water tem-perature drops below 40°F at any of the heatertemperature sensors, the pump is turned on and willremain on until the temperature at all heater sensorsrises to 45°F.Controls30Fig. 29: Outdoor VentingThe Raypak modulating temperature control is pro-vided to maintain the desired system watertemperature. The control has various modes of opera-tion which are described on the following pages. The XTherm is designed for use withPrimary/Secondary pumping only, utilizing integralinjector pumps to maintain proper flows and tempera-tures in the heater.Set-point: for a specific system supply temperature, the system return (target) temperature settings, wherethe sensor is located, should be reduced by thedifference between the system supply temperatureand the system return temperature. For example, tomaintain near 160ºF system supply temperature, andif the system ΔT is 10ºF, then the system return (target)set-point is 160-10=150ºF.Deadband: Deadband is a band of temperature sens-ing where no action occurs. All temperature controllershave a deadband and the purpose is to prevent short-cycling of the heater. The on-board temperaturecontroller has a deadband of 2ºF around the differen-tial.Differential: A heat source must be operated with atemperature differential in order to prevent short-cycling. The temperature differential is divided aroundthe “target” temperature or set-point. The Call For Heat(CFH) contact will close in the controller when thewater temperature is below the target temperature by1/2 of the differential setting, and will open when thewater temperature is above the target temperature by1/2 of the differential setting. See Fig. 30.WARNING: Installation, adjustment and service ofheater controls, including timing of various operatingfunctions, must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier. Failure to do somay result in control damage, heater malfunction, property damage, personal injury, or death.WARNING: Turn off the power to the heater beforeinstallation, adjustment or service of any heatercontrols. Failure to do so may result in boarddamage, heater malfunction, property damage, personal injury, or death.CAUTION: This appliance has provisions to beconnected to more than one supply source. Toreduce the risk of electric shock, disconnect all suchconnections before servicing.CAUTION: Risk of electric shock: More than onedisconnect switch may be required to de-energizethe equipment before servicing.NOTE: Condensate can freeze on the vent cap.Frozen condensate on the vent cap can result in ablocked flue condition.WARNING: Do not install the heater outdoors iffreezing conditions are typical. The condensate willfreeze and back up the flue system.NOTE: The vent cap and air intake hood must befurnished by the heater manufacturer in accordancewith its listing (sales order option D-11).Fig. 30: Differential GraphCalifornia Hot Water Supply, Inc.(800) 249-724430
