6 Safety Precautions■ THINGS TO CHECK BEFORE USING YOURHEDGE-TRIMMER• Before beginning work, look aroundcarefully to get a feel for the shape of theland, the trees, or hedges to be trimmed,and whether or not there are any obstacleswhich might get in the way while working,and remove any obstacles which can becleared away before beginning work.• The area within a perimeter of 45 feet of theperson using the hedge-trimmer should beconsidered a hazardous area into which noone should enter while the hedge-trimmeris in use, and when necessary yellowwarning rope, warning signs, or some otherform of warnings should be placed aroundthe perimeter of the area. When work is tobe performed simultaneously by two ormore persons, care should also be taken toconstantly look around or otherwise checkfor the presence and locations of otherpeople using hedge-trimmers within thework area so as to maintain a distancebetween each person sufficient to ensuresafety.• Before beginning work, each component ofthe hedge-trimmer should be checked tomake sure that it is in proper working orderand to make sure that there are no loosescrews or bolts, fuel leaks, ruptures, dents,or any other problems which might interferewith safe operation. Be especially careful atthis time to check that there is nothingwrong with the blades or with the joints bywhich the blades are attached to thehedge-trimmer.• Never use the hedge-trimmer when theblades have been worn down severely orwhen there is any sort of damage whichhas occurred to the blade mechanism.• Check to make sure that the handle gripand the protective cover have not comeloose before using the hedge-trimmer.■ THINGS TO CHECK BEFORE STARTINGUP THE ENGINE• Take a careful look around to make surethat no obstacles exist within a perimeter of15 feet or less around the hedge-trimmerbefore starting the engine.• The RedMax hedge-trimmer is equippedwith a centrifugal clutch mechanism whichcauses the cutting blades to begin to rotateas soon as the engine is started by puttingthe throttle into the start position. Whenstarting the engine, place the body of thehedge-trimmer onto the ground in a flatclear area and hold it firmly in place so asto ensure that neither the blades nor thethrottle come into contact with anyobstacles when the engine starts up.• Never place the throttle into the high speedposition when starting the engine.• After starting up the engine, check to makesure that the blades stop rotating when thethrottle is moved fully back to its originalposition. If the blades continue to rotateeven after the throttle has been moved fullyback, turn off the engine and take the unitto your authorized RedMax servicing dealerfor repair.■ AVOID NOISE PROBLEMCheck and follow the local regulationsas to sound level and hours ofoperations for hedge-trimmer.• In general, operate hedge-trimmersbetween 8a.m.and 5p.m.on week days and9a.m.to 5p.m.weekends. Avoid usinghedge-trimmer late at night and/or early inthe morning.NOTE
