10flmaintenance10) For those units installed at higher elevationsor into sub-standard masonry fireplaces, drafting problems may occur. Consult anexperienced dealer or mason on methodsof increasing your draft.11) Some cracking and popping noises may beexperienced during the heating up process. These noises will be minimal when your unitreaches temperature.12) Before opening your door to reload, opendraft fully for approximately 10 to 15 secondsuntil fire has been re-established. This willminimize any smoking.13) All fuel burning appliances consume oxygenduring operation. It is important that yousupply a source of fresh air to your unitwhile burning. A slightly opened window issufficient for the purpose. If you also have afireplace in your home, a downdraft may becreated by your Regency Heater causing adraft down your flue. If this occurs, slightlyopen a window near your unit.CAUTION: If the body of your unit, flue baffleor any part of the flue connector starts toglow, you are overfiring. Stop loading fuelimmediately and close the draft control untilthe glow has completely subsided.14) Green or wet wood is not recommended foryour unit. If you must add wet or green fuel, open the draft control fully until all moisturehas been dispersed by the intense fire.Once all moisture has been removed, thedraft control may be adjusted to maintainthe fire.15) If you have been burning your heater ona low draft, use caution when opening thedoor. After opening the damper, open thedoor a crack, and allow the fire to adjustbefore fully opening the door.16) The controls of your unit or the air supplypassages should not be altered to increasefiring for any reason.17) If you burn the unit too slowly or at too lowa setting your unit will not be operating asefficiently as it can. An easy rule of thumbsays that if your glass is clean, then yourflue is clean and your exhaust is clean.Burn the heater hot enough to keep yourglass clean and you won't need to cleanyour flue as often.CREOSOTEWhen wood is burned slowly, it produces tar andother organic vapours, which when combinedwith moisture, form creosote. The creosotevapours condense in the relatively cool flue of aslow burning fire. As a result, creosote residueaccumulates on the flue lining. When ignited, this creosote can result in an extremely hot fire.WARNING: Things to remember in caseof a flue fire:1. Close all draft and damper controls.2. CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.Ways to Prevent and Keep UnitFree of Creosote1) Burn heater with the draft control wide openfor about 10-15 minutes every morningduring burning season.2) Burn heater with draft control wide openfor about 10 - 15 minutes every time youapply fresh wood. This allows the wood toachieve the charcoal stage faster and burnsup any unburned gas vapours which mightotherwise be deposited within the system.3) Only burn seasoned wood! Avoid burningwet or green wood. Seasoned wood hasbeen dried at least one year.4) A small hot fire is preferable to a largesmouldering one that can deposit creosotewithin the system.5) The flue and flue connector should beinspected at least once every two monthsduring the heating season to determine isa creosote buildup has occurred6) Have flue system and unit cleaned bycompetent flue sweeps twice a year dur-ing the first year of use and at least oncea year thereafter or when a significantlayer of creosote has accumulated (3mm) it should be removed to reduce therisk of a flue fire.WOOD STORAGEStore wood under cover, such as in a shed, orcovered with a tarp, plastic, tar paper, sheetsof scrap plywood, etc., as uncovered wood canabsorb water from rain or snow, delaying theseasoning process.MAINTENANCEIt is very important to carefully maintain your fire-place heater, including burning seasoned woodand maintaining a clean heater and flue system.Have the flue cleaned before the burning seasonand as necessary during the season, as creosotedeposits may build up rapidly.
