7.13 < Troubleshooting>White Spots White spots appear on the page:• The paper is too rough and a lot of dirt fromthe paper falls to the inner devices withinthe machine, which means the transfer beltmay be dirty. Clean the inside of yourmachine. Contact a service representative.• The paper path may need cleaning. Contacta service representative.Vertical lines If black vertical streaks appear on the page:• The toner cartridge has probably beenscratched. Remove the toner cartridge andinstall a new one.If white vertical streaks appear on the page:• Clean the inside of the machine. Contact aservice representative to clean the inside ofthe machine.Color or BlackbackgroundIf the amount of background shading becomesunacceptable:• Change to a lighter weight paper. (See"Specifications on print media" on page 4.2.)• Check the environmental conditions: verydry conditions (low humidity) or a high levelof humidity (higher than 80% RH) canincrease the amount of backgroundshading.• Remove the old toner cartridge, and theninstall a new one. (See "Replacing the tonercartridge" on page 6.4.)Toner smear • Clean the inside of the machine. Contact aservice representative to clean the inside ofthe machine.• Check the paper type and quality. (See "Replacing the tonercartridge" on page 6.4.)Condition Suggested solutionsVertical repetitivedefectsIf marks repeatedly appear on the printed sideof the page at even intervals:• Clean the inside of the machine. Contact aservice representative to clean the inside ofthe machine. After cleaning the inside of themachine, if you still have the sameproblems, install a new toner cartridge of theproblem color. See "Replacing the tonercartridge" on page 6.4.• Parts of the machine may have toner onthem. If the defects occur on the back of thepage, the problem will likely correct itselfafter a few more pages.• The fusing assembly may be damaged.Contact a service representative.Background scatter Background scatter results from bits of tonerrandomly distributed on the printed page.• The paper may be too damp. Try printingwith a different batch of paper. Do not openpackages of paper until necessary so thatthe paper does not absorb too muchmoisture.• If background scatter occurs on anenvelope, change the printing layout toavoid printing over areas that haveoverlapping seams on the reverse side.Printing on seams can cause problems.• If background scatter covers the entiresurface area of a printed page, adjust theprint resolution through your softwareapplication or in printer properties.Misformedcharacters• If characters are improperly formed andproducing hollow images, the paper stockmay be too slick. Try different paper. (See"Specifications on print media" on page 4.2.)Page skew • Ensure that the paper is loaded properly.• Check the paper type and quality.
