Device Basics 29Device BasicsHome Screen OverviewThe Home screen is the starting point for manyapplications and functions, and it allows you to additems like application icons, shortcuts, folders, orwidgets to give you instant access to information andapplications.This is the default page and accessible from any menuby pressing . Status bar: located at the top of the screen, displaysboth Notification and Status icons. Notification area: displays icons associated withend-user notifications such as: email messages,calls (missed, call in progress), new voicemail,upcoming event, USB connection, emails, andText/MMS messages. (See “Using the NotificationsPanel” on page 41.) These notifications appear at the top-left of thescreen (within the Status bar) and displayimportant user information. This information can be accessed by eitherswiping down from the Status bar (page 41) or byaccessing the Notifications by pressing >> > Notifications. Status area: displays icons associated with the statusof the device such as communication, coverage,Bluetooth, 3G and Wi-Fi communication, batterylevels, GPS, etc. Main Home Screen: a customizable screen (3) thatprovides information about notifications and devicestatus, and allows access to application Widgets. Extended Home Screens: the device’s screen extendsbeyond the current visible screen width to providemore space for adding icons, widgets, and more. There are five available screens, each populatedwith its own default shortcuts or widgets.
