Health and Safety Information173Health and Safety InformationExposure to Radio Frequency (RF) SignalsYour wireless phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. Itis designed and manufactured not to exceed the emissionlimits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set bythe Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of theU.S. Government. These limits are part of comprehensiveguidelines and establish permitted levels of RF energy forthe general population. The guidelines are based on thesafety standards that were developed by independentscientific organizations through periodic and throughevaluation of scientific studies. The standards include a substantial safety margindesigned to assure the safety of all persons, regardless ofage and health. The exposure standard for wireless phones employs a unitof measurement known as Specific Absorption Rate(SAR). The SAR limit recommended by the FCC is1.6W/kg.1SAR tests are conducted using standard operatingpositions specified by the FCC with the phone transmittingat its highest certified power level in all tested frequencybands. Although the SAR is determined at the highestcertified power level, the actual SAR level of the phone1. In the U.S. and Canada, the SAR limit for mobile phonesused by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/kg) averaged over onegram of tissue. The standard incorporates a substantialmargin of safety to give additional protection for the public andto account for any variations in measurements.
