Messaging, Internet, and Instant Messenger 61Synchronizing e-mail messagesUse the Outlook E-mail account to send and receive e-mailmessages by synchronizing e-mail messages with MicrosoftExchange or Microsoft Outlook on your PC.E-mail messages can be synchronized as part of the generalsynchronization process. You will need to enable Inboxsynchronization in ActiveSync.During synchronization:• Messages are copied from the mail folders of Exchange or Outlook onyour PC to the Outlook E-mail folders on your phone.• E-mail messages in Outlook E-mail on your phone are transferred toExchange or Outlook, and then sent from those programs.Connecting Directly to an E-mail ServerYou can send and receive e-mail messages by connecting to ane-mail server. You’ll need to set up a remote connection to anetwork or an ISP, and a connection to your e-mail server. When you connect to the e-mail server, new messages aredownloaded to the phone’s Inbox folder. Also messages in thephone’s Outbox folder are sent, and messages that were deletedon the e-mail server are removed from the phone’s messagefolders.Folder Behavior With a Direct Connection to an E-mailServerThe behavior of the folders you create depends on whether youare using POP3 or IMAP4.• If you use POP3 and you move e-mail messages to a folder youcreated, the link is broken between the messages on the phone andtheir copies on the mail server. The next time you connect, the mailserver will see that the messages are missing from the phone anddelete them. This prevents you from having duplicate copies of amessage, but it also means that you no longer have access tomessages that you move to folders created from anywhere except thephone.• If you use IMAP4, the folders you created and the e-mail messages youmoved are mirrored on the server. Therefore, messages are availableto you anytime you connect to your mail server. This synchronization offolders occurs whenever you connect to your mail server; create newfolders or rename/delete folders when connected.Creating an E-mail AccountYou need to create a new account to use for retrieving andsending e-mail messages. To make a new account:1.
