92Health and safetyinformationExposure to radio frequency (RF)signalsYour wireless phone is a radio transmitter andreceiver. It is designed and manufactured not toexceed the emission limits for exposure to radiofrequency (RF) energy set by the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC) of the U.S.Government. These limits are part ofcomprehensive guidelines and establish permittedlevels of RF energy for the general population. Theguidelines are based on the safety standards thatwere developed by independent scientificorganizations through periodic and throughevaluation of scientific studies. The standards include a substantial safety margindesigned to assure the safety of all persons, regardless of age and health. The exposure standard for wireless phonesemploys a unit of measurement known as SpecificAbsorption Rate (SAR). The SAR limit set by theFCC is 1.6W/kg.** In the U.S. and Canada, the SAR limit for mobilephones used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/kg)averaged over one gram of tissue. The standardincorporates a substantial margin of safety to giveadditional protection for the public and to accountfor any variations in measurements.Health and safety information93SAR tests are conducted using standard operatingpositions specified by the FCC with the phonetransmitting at its highest certified power level inall tested frequency bands. Although the SAR isdetermined at the highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the phone while operatingcan be well below the maximum value. This isbecause the phone is designed to operate atmultiple power levels so as to use only the powerrequired to reach the network. In general, thecloser you are to a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output of the phone. Before a new model phone is available for sale tothe public, it must be tested and certified to theFCC that it does not exceed the limit establishedby the government-adopted requirement for safeexposure. The tests are performed in positionsand locations (e.g., at the ear and worn on thebody) as required by the FCC for each model. While there may be differences between the SARlevels of various phones and at various positions, they all meet the government requirement. The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorizationfor this model phone with all reported SAR levelsevaluated as in compliance with the FCC RFexposure guidelines. SAR information on thismodel phone is on file with the FCC and can befound under the Display Grant section of http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid after searching on FCC IDprinted in the label on the phone.FCC certification information for this model phoneis attached separation paper.
