General OverviewProper care, maintenance and cleaning will help ensurelong life of your grill. Periodic cleaning will help avoidaccumulations of flammable grease, fats, and otherdebris.Because of the high intensity of the Infra-red burner, anydrippings and food particles that fall onto the RadiantGlass Emitter or the burner surface are immediatelyincinerated. However, some debris and residue mayremain. To remove this residue after cooking, turn thegrill on HIGH for 5-10 minutes with the hood OPEN.The most important way to maintain the performance ofthe Infra-red burner is to do this after each use.MaintenanceThe Sterling G-Series requires very little maintenance. However, grill inspection of orifice openings and venturiinlets to clear obstructions to gas flow is recommendedprior to each use.Care of Radiant Glass EmitterLarge amounts of charred residue allow the glass to retainheat beyond its specified tolerance, which may cause it tobreak. Removal of this residue prior to each use istherefore imperative. This is easy to accomplish with alarge paint scraping razor when the glass is cool. Simplyremove the cooking grids and scrape the charred residueoff the glass. Then wipe off any remaining dust particleswith a damp paper towel. No other cleaning of the glassis necessary to ensure its proper function. However, toimprove its cosmetic appearance, additional cleaning maybe done following the instructions under Cleaning atright.Care should be taken to avoid harsh impact of theRadiant Glass Emitter with hard objects. This isparticularly true of the beveled sides of the glass. Chips inthe beveled sides greatly reduce the strength of the glassand render it more prone to breakage. Although scratcheson the glass surface do not impair its function, avoid theuse of cookware that may promote scratching, such asceramic, glass ceramic, or pots and pans with ridges onthe bottom. In addition, pots and pans with copper oraluminum bases should be avoided because they mayleave small, hard-to-remove deposits on the glass.Protection of BurnersThe burners of your grill are designed to provide a longlife of satisfactory performance. However, there are stepsyou must take to prevent cracking of the burner’s ceramicsurfaces, which will cause the burners to malfunction.Following are the most common causes of cracks and thesteps you must take to avoid them. Damage caused byfailure to follow these steps is not covered by yourgrill warranty.IMPACT WITH HARD OBJECTS - Never allow hard objectsto strike the ceramic. If objects such as these fall onto theceramic, it is likely to crack the ceramic. You should takeparticular care when inserting or removing the RadiantGlass Emitter.IMPAIRED VENTILATION OF HOT AIR FROM GRILL - Inorder for the burners to function properly, hot air createdby the burners must have a way to escape the grill. If thehot air is not allowed to escape, the burners may becomedeprived of oxygen, causing them to backfire, especially ifthe burner output is set at HIGH. If this occursrepeatedly, the burners may crack. This is the reasonyour grill was designed with ventilation louvers and otheropenings, and the accessories were designed to leave openspace at the grill surface. These design features give thehot air an escape route. Accordingly, never operate yourgrill with very little or no open space at the cookingsurface (the Radiant Glass Emitter and Cooking Gridsprovide sufficient open space). Also, never cover the ventilation louvers or otheropenings with foil or other materials that prevent airflow. Specifically:■ Do not use accessories in combinations that coverthe entire cooking surface with solid metal.Appendix A: Accessories contains further instructionsas to proper use of accessories and warnings aboutimproper use.■ Do not cover the entire surface with foil, a large pan, etc.■ For further burner maintenance instructions, seeMAINTENANCE section.Periodically inspect burner ignition electrode for residuebuild-up and proper height. The electrode should be5/16” above the surface of burner (See Figure 11, pg. 15)Maintenance and Cleaning14 Revised 9/04
