143.2.2 MacintoshInsert the CD-ROM into the computer,double-click on the US-224 installer, andfollow its instructions.Connect the US-224 to the computer, andconnect power to the unit. When the US-224is connected and powered up, the Mac willfind the drivers itself.3.3 Setting Up OMS (MacOSOnly)Cubasis, ProTools and several otherapplications rely on OMS for MIDIimplementation. OMS (Open Music System)is a standard for MIDI management on theMacintosh. Since the US-224 relies on MIDIcontroller commands for its communicationwith the host computer, you will need toinstall OMS. (The exception is DigitalPerformer, which utilizes FreeMIDI. The v3drivers support OMS and FreeMIDIindependently.)To set up OMS to work with the US-224: First, run the OMS installer. If you donot have the current version of OMS, itmay be freely downloaded atwww.opcode.com . Locate the “US-224 Drivers” folder, which was placed on your desktop whenyou ran the US-224 installer. In thisfolder, locate the US-224 OMS driver.Drag the US-224 OMS driver into theOMS folder inside your System folder.Do not drag this file into the Opcodefolder on your hard drive – it will notwork correctly. Restart your computer. Then turn onthe US-224 and start the OMS Setupapplication (located in the Opcode folderon your hard drive). Select “New Studio Setup” from the Filemenu. When prompted to select a serial(modem or printer) port, leave bothselections unchecked. Click yes andcontinue. OMS will assess all the MIDIports attached to your computer andbuild OMS instruments for the ones itrecognizes. When the setup is complete you shouldsee a list of all your connected MIDIports. At the least you should see threeicons pertaining to the US-224specifically: the US-224 icon, US-224MIDI port and US-224 Control port.(US-224 Control is the “virtual” MIDI portwith which the US-224 and its controlsurface communicate with your hostapplication.)Once OMS setup is successfully completed, you can proceed with setting up the US-224with your chosen application. Please referto the specific documentation for yourapplication for more details.3.4 Tuning Your PCA few words about computers and audio.Much has been written about the best waysto optimize your PC for handling audioapplications, and generally speaking, it’s amuch deeper topic than we’ve got space forin this manual. But here are a few basicpoints to help you get the best out of youraudio programs: Don’t run extraneous applications. Whileit’s likely you’ll sometimes use yourcomputer for applications other thanaudio, it’s strongly recommended thatyou avoid running other applications atthe same time you’re running audioprograms. Processing digital audiorequires considerable overhead fromyour computer, so don’t overtax thesystem by running other applications(especially graphics or internet tools)that can steal those resources.
