April 201942 GTH-5519 Part No. 57.0009.0619GTFourth Edition - Third PrintingOperating InstructionsDriving on a slopeWhen the machine is loaded, always travel withthe load uphill. When the machine is unloaded, travel with the forks or attachment downhill. On steep terrain, drive only up and down hill, andalways keep the machine in gear. Do not turnacross slope when machine is traveling up ordown a slope.Limit travel path and speed according to thecondition of the ground surface, traction, slope, location of personnel and any other factors whichmay create a hazard. Never drive the machineunless the mast and equipment are in their propertravel position.Whether a machine will tip over during dynamicmachine operation involves many variablesthat need to be considered. Among these arepavement/ground conditions, stability and slope,as well as machine equipment, operator skill, loadposition, tire inflation, machine speed, etc.Additionally, tip over of a machine is dependent inlarge part upon operator inputs such as the speedand smoothness of the operation as well as theposition of the attachment and its load.Construction sites and roads will frequentlychange slope from place to place, can be hard andsoft, and change due to the construction activitiesand weather.Operators should be properly trained and usetheir best judgment and experience to takethe necessary precautions to prevent tip over.Operators must assess the jobsite variables andavoid exceeding the machine’s (or operator’s)capabilities for terrain and conditions.Rear Proximity AlarmThe system is designed to supplement other safetypractices and systems such as signal person andmirrors, and is not intended to be used as the solemethod of collision avoidance. It should be used inconjunction with established safety programs andprocedures to augment the safe operation of thetelehandler. The operator is always the first line ofdefense when safely operating the telehandler andshould always use direct line of sight and indirectvisual methods, like mirrors, to identify and avoidobstacles and collision hazards. The system detects both moving and stationaryobjects in a pre-defined coverage area (see thespecifications and chart in the back of this manual)and reports the distance of the closest object viavisual range indicators and an audible signal to theoperator. The system can detect most objects withinthe detection zone. However, there are someinstances where objects can go undetected.Obstacle size, shape, relative location, andcomposition are all factors determining if, whenand where an object is detected. The systemoperates by transmitting a pulse of very low powerelectromagnetic energy. Any energy that strikesan object reflects a certain amount of this energyback to the sensor. If the returned energy is ofsufficient magnitude, it is used to indicate objectpresence and determine the object’s distance. While the system can resolve multiple objects, only the object closest to the vehicle is reported tothe display since it represents the nearest collisionhazard.Always look in the direction of travel. When therear proximity alarm sounds, bring the machineto a controlled stop and verify the location of theobstacle. Only proceed when the obstacle is clearof the travel path.Display range indications illuminate to give arelative distance measurement to the closestdetected object. LEDs operate from left to right, with a closer object resulting in more LEDsilluminated. |
