If there is asmell of gas in the building, proceed as follows:> Avoid rooms that smell of gas.> Open all accessible doors and windows fully andensure adequate ventilation.> Avoid the use of naked flames (e.g. lighters, matches).> Do not smoke.> Do not use any electrical switches, mains plugs,doorbells, telephones or other communicationsystems in the building.> Close the gas meter isolator device or the mainisolator device.> If possible, close the gas stop cock on the boiler.> Warn other occupants in the building by knockingdoors or calling out.> Leave the building.> If you can actually hear gas leaking, leave the buildingimmediately and ensure that others do not enter thebuilding.> Alert the fire brigade and police when you are outsidethe building.> Use a telephone outside the building to inform theemergency service department of the gas supplycompany.1Fig. 2.1 Closing the gas stop cockWhat to do in an emergency if you smell exhaustfumesInstallation errors, damage, handling, unauthorisedinstallation sites or similar can cause exhaust fumes toescape and result in a risk of poisoning. If there is asmell of exhaust fumes in the building, proceed asfollows:> Open all accessible doors and windows fully andensure adequate ventilation.> Switch the boiler off.Preventing the risk of explosionThe risk of explosion arises from the flammable mixtureof gas and air. Take note of the following:> Do not use or store explosive or highly flammablesubstances (such as petrol or paint) in the same roomas the boiler.Preventing scaldingThere is a danger of scalding at the hot water draw-offpoints if the hot water temperatures are greater than60 °C. Young children and elderly persons can be at riskat lower temperatures.> Select the temperature so that nobody is at risk.Preventing material damage due to unauthorisedchanges to the appliance.Take note of the following:> Never interfere or tamper with the boiler or otherparts of the heating system.> Never try to carry out maintenance work or repairson the boiler yourself.> Do not damage or remove any seals on components.Only suitably qualified heating engineers or ourcustomer service may alter sealed components.Material damage caused by corrosionTo prevent corrosion on the boiler and also on theexhaust system, note the following:> Do not use any sprays, solvents, chlorinated cleaningagents, paint, adhesives or similar substances in thevicinity of the boiler.Under unfavourable circumstances, these substancesmay cause corrosion.Safety 2
