Driving and o peration 123Driving hintsThe first 600 mil es (1000 k m)Drive your vehicle at v arious speeds. Donot use full throttle. Never allow the eng ineto labour at low revs.Make good use of all gea rs. Depress theaccelerator pedal a maximum of aroundthree quarters of the ava ila ble ped al travelin all gears and drive ranges.Do not drive faster than three quarters ofmax imum speed.Avoid quick starts, sudden a ccelerationand prolonged high-speed driv ing , toavoid engine d amage and to conservefuel.Do not brake unnecessarily hard for thefirst 125 miles (200 km ).If possib le, a void towing another vehicle.Never coa st with engine not runningMany units may then not function (e. g.brake servo unit, power steering, airbagsystem). Driving in this manner is a dangerto yourself and others.Brake servo unitWith the engine not running, the brak eservo unit is no longer effective once thebrake peda l has been depressed once ortwice. The braking effect is not red uced, but substantia lly greater foot pressure isnecessary to stop the vehicle.Pow er st eeringNev er leave the steering wheel on full lockwhen the v ehicle is stationary, a s this maydamage the power steering pump.If the p ow er steering should fail - e.g. whenthe vehicle is being towed with the engineswitched off - the v ehicle can still b eprop erly steered, but considera bly greatereffort is necessary.Dr iving in mountainous terrai n or with acarav an / trail erElec trica lly driven fan; the fan coolingcapacity is not dependent on enginespeed. It is not necessary, therefore, whendriving uphill to shift down into a lowergear if the vehicle can c lim b in a highergear.Driv ing in ext rem e conditionsWhen driving in haza rd ous conditions, e. g.in snow , ice, mud, sand or water, driveslowly and cautiously to allow for greaterbrak ing distances. If stuck, use 2nd g ear (automatictransmission in drive rang e 2) to avoidspinning the front w heels.Use sand, tyre cha ins or other non-slipma terials to provide traction when stuck insnow , mud or ice.Driv ing through w aterBefore attem pting to drive through water, check the depth. If the depth is slightlylower tha n the underbody of your vehicle,do not attempt to drive throug h it.Driving too quickly through water cancause water to enter the engine throughthe air inta ke, causing severe dama ge.Drive slowly, in a high engine rpm in as lowa gear a s p ossible.Driv ing wi th a roof loa dDo not exceed the perm issible roof load -see page 212. For safety reasons, distribute the loa d ev enly a nd secure ittightly with straps so that it cannot slip. S etthe ty re p ressure to the value given for fullload. Do not drive fa ster than 75 mph(120 km /h). C heck and retighten straps atfreq uent intervals.
