Driving and operating 107Electric vehicleoperation modesOperationThis vehicle is an extended rangeelectric vehicle. It uses an electricpropulsion system to drive the vehicleat all times. Electricity is the vehicle'sprimary source of energy, while petrolis the secondary source. The vehicle has two modes ofoperation: Electric and extendedrange. In both modes, the vehicle ispropelled by its electric drive unit. Itconverts electrical energy intomechanical energy to drive thewheels. The vehicle's performanceremains the same in either mode.Depending on the selected operationmode, a battery or a fuel gauge isshown mainly in the instrumentcluster.Battery gauge 3 63.Fuel gauge 3 63.Electric modeIn electric mode the vehicle does notuse fuel or produce emissions. Duringthis primary mode, the vehicle ispowered by electrical energy storedin the high voltage battery. Thevehicle can operate in this mode untilthe battery has reached a low charge. There are some conditions when thebattery charge is high enough toprovide electric mode operation, butthe engine still runs. They are:■ Cold ambient temperatures.■ Hot or cold high voltage batterytemperatures.■ The bonnet being open or notcompletely closed and latched.■ Certain high voltage battery faultconditions.■ Engine maintenance mode or fuelmaintenance mode being run.Extended range modeWhen the vehicle reaches the end ofits electric range, it switches toextended range mode. In thissecondary mode, electricity isproduced by the fuel‐poweredengine. This secondary source ofelectric power extends the vehiclerange. Operation will continue inextended range mode until thevehicle can be plugged in to rechargethe high voltage battery and restoreelectric mode. The high voltage battery will continueto provide some power and worktogether with the engine to providepeak performance when it is required, such as driving up a steep incline orfor high acceleration manoeuvres. The battery will not be charged norwill electric vehicle range be restoredby the engine. In either electric mode or extendedrange mode, if there is a high voltagebattery fault, the engine may runwithout turning off to generate therequired electricity. The malfunctionindicator light will turn on.Malfunction indicator light 3 67.
