174Fuel consumption,Fuel, RefuellingFuel cons umptionFuel consump tion is determined und erspecific d riv ing cond itions, see page 251.Fitting special equipm ent will increase theweight of the vehicle. This in turn increasesfuel consum ption and reduces thespecified max imum speed of the vehicle. There is increased friction betw een engineand transmission parts during the first600 miles (1000 k m) . This increases fuelconsump tion.Fuel for petrol e nginesCommercially av ailable high-quality fuelsare suitable (ca talytic converter, seepage 176, octane numb ers – seepages 248, 249). Fuel quality has a dec isiveinfluence on the power output, runningbehaviour and serv ice life of the engine. The additives contained in the fuel play animportant role in this regard. You shouldtherefore only use high-q uality fuelscontaining add itiv es.Fuel with too low an octane number cancause pinking. Vauxhall cannot be heldlia ble for resulting dama ge.Petrol with a higher octane number canalways be used.Pump noz zles for lead ed fuel cannot beinserted into the filler neck of v ehicles thatop erate on unleaded fuel. The ignition tim ing is a utoma tica llyadjusted according to the grade of fuelused (octane number), see pa ges 248, 249.Use of petrol w ith a n oc ta ne rating of 95will ensure economica l driving.Fuel for diesel enginesDiesel engines m ust be operated only oncomm ercially av ailable diesel fuel meetingthe specifications of DIN EN 590. Do notuse m arine diesel oils, heating oils orentirely or partially plant-based dieselfuels, such as rape seed oil or bio diesel,Aquazole and similar diesel-wateremulsions.The flow and filterability of diesel fuel a reinsufficient at low temperatures, as a resultof crystallized paraffins.Diesel fuels with improved low-temperatureproperties a re therefore available on themark et during the winter m onths. Makesure that you fill the tank with winter fuelbefore the start of the cold weather season.Additives can be used with diesel fuels withwinter prop erties that are guaranteed bythe manufa cturer and when using dieselfuel filters that are heated depending onthe outside temperature.
