275 Connecting to power supply and bus systemVEGAPULS 61 • Modbus and Levelmaster protocol41361-EN-1602245 Connecting to power supply and bussystem5.1 Preparing the connectionAlways keep in mind the following safety instructions:Warning:Connect only in the complete absence of line voltage.• The electrical connection must only be carried out by trainedpersonnel authorised by the plant operator.• If overvoltage surges are expected, overvoltage arresters shouldbe installed. The instrument requires an operating voltage of 8 … 30 V DC. Operat-ing voltage and digital bus signal are carried on separate two-wireconnection cables. The instrument is connected with standard two-wire, twisted cablesuitable for RS 485. If electromagnetic interference is expected whichis above the test values of EN 61326 for industrial areas, screenedcable should be used.Use cable with round cross section for instruments with housing andcable gland. To ensure the seal effect of the cable gland (IP protectionrating), find out which cable outer diameter the cable gland is suitablefor.Use a cable gland fitting the cable diameter.Make sure that the entire installation is carried out according to theFieldbus specification. In particular, make sure that the bus is termi-nated with suitable terminating resistors.Metric threadsIn the case of instrument housings with metric thread, the cableglands are screwed in at the factory. They are sealed with plasticplugs as transport protection. You have to remove these plugs before electrical connection.NPT threadIn the case of instrument housings with self-sealing NPT threads, it isnot possible to have the cable entries screwed in at the factory. Thefree openings for the cable glands are therefore covered with red dustprotection caps as transport protection.Prior to setup you have to replace these protective caps with ap-proved cable glands or close the openings with suitable blind plugs. With plastic housing, the NPT cable gland or the Conduit steel tubemust be screwed without grease into the threaded insert.Max. torque for all housings, see chapter "Technical data".In systems with potential equalisation, connect the cable screendirectly to ground potential at the power supply unit, in the connectionSafety instructionsVoltage supplyConnection cableCable glandsCable screening andgrounding
