Maintenance Instructions CLEANING49Inspect the paper element after every 100 hours ofservice and replace the element and safety filter ev-ery 400 hours (or when dirty or damaged). Morefrequent replacement may be required when operat-ing in extremely dusty conditions as indicated by theair filter restriction gauge. Service the air cleaner asfollows:1. Lift Mono Latch Twist Lock™ and twist theOptiAir™ cover to the left into the “open” posi-tion to remove the air cleaner cover. Wash thecover and dust ejection valve. Check that thesecomponents are in good condition. The dustejection valve is subject to wear and deteriora-tion and should be inspected carefully and re-placed every 2 years or when damaged. Thelips of the valve should close and fit together;any cracks, deformation, or wear in the valve iscause for replacement.2. Remove the filter element by pulling it out of thecanister. There will be some initial resistanceas the filter seal breaks loose and slides off ofthe outlet tube. Gently move the end of thefilter up and down and side to side or twist toloosen the seal. Use gentle action to minimizethe amount of dust dislodged as the filter is re-moved.3. Discard the filter element if excessive air flowrestriction has been indicated by the air filterrestriction gauge and proceed to Step 6. Cleanthe filter element by gently tapping on a flat, hard surface. If excessive restriction still existsafter cleaning the element, it should be re-placed.NOTE: Use care when cleaning the filter ele-ment. The filter element and/or seal surfacemay be damaged by tapping too hard or hittingon an uneven surface or sharp edge. Washingthe element in water or cleaning solution is notrecommended. Do not try to clean the elementwith compressed air. Remember replacing a fil-ter is less expensive than replacing a dustedengine.4. Use a bright light inside the element to inspectfor damage. Check the element very carefullyfor pin holes or other damage that will allowdirt to leak through the paper media. Replaceelement if necessary.5. Check the condition and resilience of the radialsealing surface (inside of the open end) of thefilter. Replace the filter if any cracks, tears, orother damage to the sealing surface are noted.6. Without removing, visually inspect the conditionof the safety filter for damage or holes. Thesafety filter should only be removed for replace-ment every 400 hours (or when dirty or dam-aged).IMPORTANT: Prior to removing the safety filter, make sure the inside surface of the air cleanercanister is clean. This will minimize the risk ofdirt entering the outlet tube which can cause pre-mature engine wear.7. After removing the safety filter, use a clean, damp cloth and wipe the interior of the air clean-er canister clean. Use special care to cleanboth the inside and outside surfaces of theoutlet tube.IMPORTANT: Any dust left on the inside of theoutlet tube will go into the engine and causewear.8. Check the outside surface of the outlet tube forsmoothness and cleanness (this is the sealingsurface).9. Insert and seat the safety filter and OptiAir™el ement carefully into the canister, applyingpressure at the outer rim of the filter; not at theflexible center. Make sure the filter element iscompletely in place before installing the cover.NOTE: DO NOT use petroleum based lubri-cants on the sealing surfaces of the filter; usetalcum powder or dry silicone lubricants if re-quired for filter installation.
